Story

It was one fateful night our Sophomore year at Auburn. Sam and his roommates, Rob Sanek, Jon Belyeu, and Joseph Brewer, decided to host a party at their luxurious apartment in Logan Square. A lot of my AOII friends were from Huntsville and knew the guys, so naturally we were all invited. My best friend from Mountain Brook, Sarah Mcclees, had decided to leave the Pits of Despair (Tuscaloosa) and come down for a weekend of fun on the Plains! Sarah and I started talking to Sam while playing games and snapping selfies on my iconic Sony handheld camera. I remember vividly that he was wearing a snazzy middle-aged Dad shirt, that he was very proud to inform me was from a Thrift Store. Moving on, I ended up challenging another party goer to a liquid consumption competition. After this, I decided cookin' in the kitchen was a good idea and grabbed Sam to join. Knowing “nothing good happens after 2 a.m.”, Sam, the gentleman that he is, walked me to my dorm in the Village. After that night, we continued to spend time together with our mutual friends and at the AU pool. But we never officially dated in college. Sam transferred to South Alabama and we didn't talk much for the next 4 years. Fast forward to February 2017 when Sam liked my latest Instagram pic. If you know Sam you know this was weird- he rarely uses social media and would take long sabbaticals from Facebook. I didn't even know he had an Instagram. This sparked me to text him- he was back in Huntsville and I was back in Birmingham. I suggested we hang out sometime, not thinking out logistics, and he immediately asked to drive to Birmingham that weekend....3 days later. We had dinner and learned that his stomach does not enjoy sour beer and from there.....the rest is history.

Tidbits

How did you propose?

> Planning - I got tickets for us to see one of our favorite bands, The Dip, at the High Watt in Nashville. Then, I went to the public use office space of our apartment complex to call Anna's parents to ask for their blessing and permission to marry their daughter. They ran a credit check on me and ensured I didn't have any outstanding warrants and the blessing and permission was given. Next, I asked Kagan, one of Anna's best friends that was living in Nashville, to help me surprise Anna. She was in on the plan. Finally, I reserved a room for us in the Westin and had it decorated with flowers, chocolates, and balloons reading "Marry me?".
> Complications - Closing in on our trip to Nashville, I called the Westin to ensure all the trip details were ironed out - they weren't. The room had been reserved for the wrong weekend and the hotel was completely booked * panic sweats *. Miraculously, the Westin was able to move reservations around and found a room for us overlooking the Music City Center.
> Travel - We departed Friday after work and were going to a Holiday Inn about 5 miles away from the High Watt - as far as Anna knew. As we neared the city center Anna said, "I don't think we are going the right way." A minute or so later and we were definitely "[not] going the right way." Anna got more and more frustrated with me due to my playing dumb. We pulled up to the Westin and she was ready to throw punches. I handed the valet the keys and proceeded to unload our luggage. I watched her gears spin for 20 to 30 seconds and then heard, "I'm SO SORRY."
> Proposal - Many more apologies followed as we walked to the front desk to check-in - Anna still not knowing there was a larger scheme in place. We checked in and headed for our room. Upon entering the room, Anna was met with all of the wonderful decorations and balloons reading "Marry me?". She turned to me and said, "Oh my god! We've got the wrong room! There's stuff in here!" I went down on one knee and the pieces fell in place. She turned beet red and started to cry with a big smile on her face. She said "yes" :)

How did you first meet?

Bird Watching!
....just kidding see our story.

Who made the first move? How?

Totally Anna. Sam was too shy at the time.

Who's going to take out the trash?

Anna: "Sam"
Sam: "Otis"
Otis: "Harry"
Harry: "Anna"

What was your most memorable date?

Anna's: Probably our first official date in February 2017. That sour beer really wasn't his friend...
Sam's: Hiking Monte Sano and walking around Burritt. We unintentionally crashed a wedding reception but the sunset over the city was worth it!

What's your favorite activity together?

Dance Parties with Harry and Otis, duh

Where are you going for your honeymoon?

Most likely Europe. Sam has never been and I would love to show him the charm of Italy and explore a new country with him. However, this might be postponed (thanks 'Rona) so we are thinking of going to Harry Potter world! Butter beer anyone?

What's the best meal you have eaten together?

Anna's: Any meal at Bella's Italian Restaurant at the base of Sugar Mountain, NC. My parents have taken me there for years while vacationing there, and Sam and I have added it as a must when we go to NC. Sam's family has gotten to enjoy it with us as well!
Sam's: New Year's Eve at Over Yonder with Anna Kat's parents in Valle Crucis, NC. Great farm-to-table experience. Old fashion in a smoked glass (actually 2), whole fried okra, and a pork chop with collard greens.

What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?

Anna's: Our first white water rafting trip together down the Ocoee River and camping onsite afterwards
Sam's: Quick weekend trip to Banner Elk, NC. It dumped snow and we were able to enjoy skiing on Beech Mtn, hiking to Linville Falls, and driving the Blue Ridge Parkway.
