Joy Proposal Story: Nikita & Sanket

by Cali Pitchel

Sanket was on a business trip to India when his usual accommodations fell through and he decided to stay with his family friend. Nikita and her family had just landed in India for a family trip, which started at her cousin’s place. Through a twist of fate, it ended up being the same place!

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Sanket and I were planning a trip to Spain last June. We had talked about getting engaged and in my view Spain would be the best place to do it! Sanket isn’t much a planner so all he’d have to do is pick a spot and get down on his knee. Turns out when I probed him about it, he said the thought hadn’t even crossed his mind! There went my picturesque Spanish proposal.

A wedding is a giant party to start your marriage – which is the longest party you’ll ever attend if you do it right.

What I didn’t know is that Sanket had extensively planned a surprise proposal for me. I thought I was going to brunch in Laguna with my girlfriends. Though I was looking forward to my meal, when a photographer from the restaurant asked to take our picture overlooking the ocean, my friends jumped at the chance.

My reluctance evaporated when I saw Sanket standing in a gazebo overlooking Laguna Beach, surrounded by rose petals, and champagne! I literally ran into his arms and the rest is a bit of a blur for the both of us. But I definitely said yes!

The rest of the day was just as much fun. Sanket’s family had flown out and of course my best friends were already there, but we all got into a limo and headed home to a surprise house party with even more of my family and friends. It was the best day – Sanket did well and I was totally surprised.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Food tastings. I love to eat and working with caterers to fine tune dishes is a dream come true.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

It’s important to put it all in perspective. Everyone will say it’s the biggest and best day of your life or the first day of the rest of your life or whatever. It’s not. It’s a special day. One of the most special days in your life. But your marriage, which is an everyday event, is more important and more special. Remember that and you’ll be fine. Also make lists and stay organized.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

There’s a great level of customization, but I didn’t actually have to place, code or format anything. It also feels modern and sleek.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

I would say start early. I made our “wedsite” three months into our engagement. I even used it for our engagement party which allowed our guests to bookmark it and check back for details throughout the year.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

A wedding is a giant party to start your marriage – which is the longest party you’ll ever attend if you do it right.
