Joy Proposal Story: Paulette & Alton, Jr.

by Cali Pitchel

I realize life is too short and not promised so I see each day as a blessing and relish every moment of planning this wedding. It’s a celebration of love and life for me and Alton.

How did the two of you meet?

There were two meetings really. The first one I like to think of as “the-first-time-I-saw-your-face” moment. We worked at the same company, but in different divisions. I was walking up the hill to go into one of the buildings as he was walking out of the building and down the hill. All I can recall is thinking how dreamy he looked and how everything around me was moving in slow motion. I think he said, “Hi,” and I responded—but that’s all I can recall. Since we both were in relationships the “Hi” was all that occurred at the time.

Fast forward five years to meeting number two: We still both worked for the company but neither of us was in a relationship. We continued to run into each other occasionally but still nothing exciting happened until someone I supervised took the lead. She was the known matchmaker at the company, and she had set her eyes on me and Alton. Apparently, she had been talking to him about meeting someone who she thought would be perfect for him but it took months for him to finally agree to meet the person.

Joy is the embodiment off all that makes you happy, makes you smile, makes you want to make others happy. It’s the kick in life. Joy in a marriage is what makes you want to run home after work and makes you not want to leave home in the morning to go to work. It’s being with the one you love which never gets old. That lasts forever.

As soon as he agreed she told me what she had been up to and asked me to “meet” him. I was initially taken aback, but his dreaminess was too hard to resist. So the matchmaker escorted me over to his office for an official “meeting” one afternoon. I’ll never forget what he said when he realized that I was his “hook up.” He said with a smile, ” Yeah. That’s the one.” That was it for me. And truth be told, he had me at “Hi” five years previously at our first meeting. The rest, as they say, is history.

How long have you been together?

We have to be the longest couple ever to be together before getting married. It’s been two times 10 years and counting! It sounds crazy I know but for us it’s been perfect.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Alton and I have always felt “married,” although we had not done it legally. Our proposal story is simple and sweet. Alton and I discussed the ring in advance. It was no secret to me. When it was ready Alton had me pick it up and asked me to meet him at my Mom’s house. There he took the ring and went over to my Mom. He asked for my hand in marriage, showed her the ring, and she said “YES” that he could marry me. He then came over to me got down on one knee, professed his love for me, and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said “YES” too!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Everything so far really! I love planning our wedding from picking the venue to looking at colors for our RSVP envelopes. I think the experience that will stand out the most will be when I find my dress. Standing in THE dress and knowing that it will be what I wear when I marry Alton will be incredible.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

It’s easy. Alton has been battling cancer for the last few years. There’s nothing like seeing your man go through that battle and knowing you could lose him. There’s no pressure in wedding planning for me after that. I realize life is too short and not promised so I see each day as a blessing and relish every moment of planning this wedding. It’s a celebration of love and life for me and Alton.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Take a moment to really “feel” what your wedding is about and find the words to convey that to your friends and family. Use photos and have fun with your Love Story especially the Tidbits section. The Love Story section is the personality of the website to me and gives your guests a preview of the type of wedding to come. Also, make sure to fill out all the details you want your guests to know. Having Joy as an app on your phone is super convenient and I think guests will appreciate having easy access to your wedding information.
