Joy Proposal Story: Ryan & Melissa

by Cali Pitchel

Ryan and Melissa met completely by chance. Ryan, from California, came out to New York for a work trip with some free time over the weekend. He was looking forward to catching up with a high school friend when that friend introduced him to Melissa. What was planned to be just an afternoon of hanging out with Melissa turned into the rest of the weekend. Smitten, Ryan flew back to California but he and Melissa kept in touch. After a few weeks of long Skype conversations Ryan booked a ticket back out to New York. That New York afternoon has turned into a life together in Atlanta and a future lifetime of marriage.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Melissa and Ryan had been planning a trip to Banff, Canada and, unbeknownst to Melissa, Ryan had been looking for the perfect opportunity to propose. While the vacation was the ideal chance, he needed to throw Melissa off the scent, so he told her he would “never propose” while abroad. With expectations adequately waylaid, Ryan popped the question alone with Melissa by glacial lake on the second day of their 27 mile hike along Jasper, Canada’s Skyline Trail. Thought it was September there had been snow the night before and the setting was beautiful.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Thinking about the small details and looking forward to how they will come together on the big day. Similarly, we are looking forward to having our respective friends and family partying together for the first time!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Keep an eye on the end result, the wedding will be a fun day but it is just a celebration and send off into the rest of our lives together.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

The style is more contemporary than other wedding websites and less formulaic. Other websites look like a repurposed blog template. Joy feels truly designed for relaying information about people and an event.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

It seems obvious but I would recommend frequently leaving the editing mode and checking in to see how visitors to the site will see items displayed. The way you are thinking about building website components may be different than what is intuitive for the user.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy should last forever. What does that mean to you?

Joy is something that we’re experiencing now and on our wedding day. It is our goal to keep the laughter, fun, caring and, of course, joy, present every day of marriage as well.
