Joy Proposal Story: Tess & Matt

by Cali Pitchel

How did the two of you meet?

We were introduced by a friend at a bar, a sort of anti-climactic meeting because I was in mid-conversation at the time and didn’t remember meeting him then. But a month or so later saw him out again one night and asked a friend, “Who is that?” From that moment I had a very persistent crush that I couldn’t shake. There was just something about him that drew me in.

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

We went on a beautiful trip to New Orleans in January. Neither of us had ever been, and we loved it immediately. We spent a few days wandering through old neighborhoods and taking in all the architecture and history, and eating our weight in shellfish as well. Sitting at the airport waiting to board our flight home, we started talking about getting married and picking out some rings. And the rest is history!

When I think of my husband I think of a joy that is calm, self-assured, and enduring. A person who is constant and true, and doesn’t waver. So that’s what joy lasting forever means to me.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Probably the invitations. Matt is a graphic designer, so it was fun talking about our vision for a color and design scheme, and seeing the different iterations come to life as he worked.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

The nice thing about planning a wedding in six weeks was that I didn’t really have time to get very insane about it. I know that if I had a full year to plan, I would have taken that whole year to obsess about every detail down to the nitty-gritty. But in six weeks, you’re just scrambling to get each decision made and move on to the next. Everything was pretty straightforward and our guest list was so small (28 people) that it kept the planning pretty simple.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

The multiple levels of gating information on the site. The ability to let anyone see the site publicly, but only the people with the code see all the extra details, is super helpful.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Send out paper invitations that include the URL and site code, so that people understand your event is important and warrants an official RSVP and being marked on calendars. There’s less chance that it’ll get “lost” in someone’s inbox as with email-only invitations. Vistaprint does really cheap, large postcards that they can mail out directly for you, after you upload a list of your guests’ addresses.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

It’s important to think more about what being married means, and the actual long-term implications of being tied to someone forever, than about the details of this one-day event. When I think of my husband I think of a joy that is calm, self-assured, and enduring. A person who is constant and true, and doesn’t waver. So that’s what joy lasting forever means to me.
