Vendor Spotlight: Signature by Tavit

by Cali Pitchel

How did you get into photography? Are you self taught or formally trained?

I worked at Best Buy for eight years, from 2004-2012. Throughout that time I worked in many positions there. It wasn’t until I worked in the camera department that I identified with my true calling. I visited my mom in France yearly and when I eventually purchased my Canon 40D. Once I reviewed the photos I had took, I knew this was it. This was what I wanted to do in life. I would purchase magazines and books and sit at coffee shops for hours, daily, learning about photography.

How did you get into wedding photography specifically?

I used to shoot a lot of music festivals and DJs, and nightclubs in general, my images were captured at a ton of parties. A few of my friends loved my pictures from these settings and wanted to hire me for their wedding to capture their party. One thing lead to another and I wanted to be involved from start to finish, not just the reception. So now I shoot weddings in their entirety, and I love it.

Describe your style in one sentence.

I love storytelling, creativity, and colors—so that’s what I try to showcase.

What’s been your favorite experience as a wedding photographer?

Traveling and being trusted. I don’t care how good a photographer is, if trust isn’t established, something will go awry. My ultimate first goal is to show my passion and enthusiasm. After that, I love to travel to destinations to capture special days. It’s a perk.

What do you love most about photographing weddings? Why do you photograph weddings in particular?

I love the fact that the couple let me do what I want because they trust my vision. Being creative is the best thing in the world. I enjoy weddings because each one is unique. To make something out of nothing is very challenging. A small part of it is pride. When you can succeed and show yourself what you’re capable of, it boosts your confidence.

Where is the most interesting or unique place you’ve photographed a wedding? Was there anything especially challenging  about it?

I shot a wedding inside the Colorado River. It was insane. We had to take boats to the destination. The scenery was breathtaking. The photos created themselves and found no difficulty. Being outdoors between mountains next to a river was once in a lifetime.

Do you have a favorite, must-capture moment for every wedding?

Yes, each wedding I try to get one ‘Signature’ image. I never plan it, I just know it, see it, and feel it when I do.

As a photographer, what has been your biggest wedding day challenge?

There have been a few venues with lots of hills and zero backdrops. But no matter what, it’s the wedding photographers responsibility to create. So that’s what I did.

What piece of advice would you give brides and grooms to ensure that they get wedding photos they love forever?

Meet with them first, interview at least two, and go with your gut. Make sure you love the style that they have. This will only happen once.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

No one remembers the food or music the little stuff etc at the wedding, they remember memories. You and everyone else will remember your laughs, and wild moments. Pictures and videos are there to spark those memories. No matter what hiccups occur, just laugh and smile. It will all be okay.
