After all, offering a gift at a wedding is a gesture that recognizes the symbolic importance of this special day and union, one that transcends geography, time, and space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, most American wedding guests feel more comfortable giving gifts they can physically wrap and hold, even though<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2018\/08\/wedding-gift-cash\/569131\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giving money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has grown more popular in recent years with the emergence of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/withjoy.com\/cash-fund-registry\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cash registry sites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Think traditional retail items like crystal vases and decanter sets, kitchen appliances, or personalized decor, as opposed to sending cash or funding an experience, like a honeymoon. In fact, according to a 2018 NerdWallet survey, 52 percent of Americans believe that asking for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/blog\/wedding-guest-study\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">money in lieu of gifts is tacky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and unbecoming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, wedding gifts are by no means required or expected in North America. But if guests choose to give to the newlyweds, the amount they spend should align with their personal budget before all else. \u201cAt the end of the day,\u201d according CNBC\u2019s The Wedding Economy, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/05\/25\/if-youre-giving-cash-as-a-wedding-gift-dont-make-this-mistake.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wedding gifts are meant to honor the couple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thank them for including you\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is this the case with the rest of the world? Certainly not. In fact, cash giving is common, and oftentimes expected, in most every country except the US. Which goes to show that while no one-size-fits-all exists when it comes to wedding gifts, the gesture itself is rooted in, and dependent on, the culture in which it exists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the US, here are the wedding gift traditions of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\/influence-rankings\" class=\"broken_link\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world\u2019s top 5 most culturally influential countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from U.S. News &amp; World Report\u2019s Cultural Influence Rankings. These rankings reflect the countries that are trendsetters in the areas of food, fashion, and easy living \u2014 trends that have been absorbed by other cultures and become part of the wider global conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Italy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59583\" src=\"https:\/\/rehearsaluploads.withjoy.com\/uploads\/uploads\/anton-mislawsky-1353574-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"italy wedding gift traditions\" width=\"1093\" height=\"557\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Italian weddings, which are often rich in symbolism and tradition, guests are expected to extend gifts to the newlyweds \u2014 but not just any ordinary gift. Rather, it should reflect the community standing of the families. In other words, the more well-respected a family, the more extravagant the gift. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also considered tacky to purchase an item that was on sale because<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everafterguide.net\/italian-wedding-gift-etiquette.html\" class=\"broken_link\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it won\u2019t be well-received by any of the parties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because giving in an Italian wedding is a way to show respect to the bride and groom, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their respective families, personalized gifts or elegant items are always favored. And if guests are unable to purchase a suitable gift \u2014 for whatever reason, financial or otherwise \u2014 it\u2019s best they decline the invitation altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the gifting doesn\u2019t stop there. In traditional Italian weddings, brides carry <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">la borsa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 or a satin bag \u2014 during the reception, and guests place envelopes of cash in it, usually between $100 and $400, if they want a dance with the bride or to help the newlyweds with future arrangements such as a house or vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>France<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59584\" src=\"https:\/\/rehearsaluploads.withjoy.com\/uploads\/uploads\/sweet-ice-cream-photography-91777-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"france wedding gift traditions\" width=\"1036\" height=\"583\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the country that has the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.fr\/20180214\/paris-city-of-love-romance-really\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">city of love and romance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, French couples don\u2019t usually feel comfortable asking for specific gifts, \u201cso<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2014\/05\/french-weddings-are-more-fun.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost everyone gives the newlyweds cash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; Guests can look for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pot commun \u2014 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or common pot for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brides.com\/story\/what-should-i-expect-at-a-french-wedding\" class=\"broken_link\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 at the wedding reception where they can place a check or a congratulatory card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event the couple does have a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list de mariage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 or wedding registry \u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chezpluie.com\/blogs\/news\/french-wedding-gift-ideas\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vintage French linen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one delightful option to give as a guest. According to Chez Pluie, a French international resource guide, linen \u201cwas traditionally given to . . . newlyweds inside their marriage armoire.\u201d It also gets better with every wash, meaning the more it\u2019s used the softer it becomes, making it a practical and thoughtful gift that\u2019ll be used by the couple for many years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Spain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59585\" src=\"https:\/\/rehearsaluploads.withjoy.com\/uploads\/uploads\/laura-velasco-1424272-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"spain wedding gift traditions\" width=\"1123\" height=\"749\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to hard cash, Spain is no different from other European countries that prefer this model. Guests can then transfer cash or deposit a check, enough to at least cover the cost of their reception meal, and include a short congratulatory message with their name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/expat\/4205039\/Wedding-etiquette-in-Spain.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimum is 100 euros per person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d reports <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Telegraph<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c[and] the daughter of a friend might get a little bit more than that, [while] a niece would get significantly more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common Spanish tradition, during the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banquete de bodas \u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the wedding feast\/reception \u2014 is for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.donquijote.org\/spanish-culture\/traditions\/spanish-weddings\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guests to approach the head table<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and offer the newlyweds a gift as a thank you for being invited to their wedding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>United Kingdom<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59586\" src=\"https:\/\/rehearsaluploads.withjoy.com\/uploads\/uploads\/thomas-ae-610196-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"uk wedding gift tradtions\" width=\"1094\" height=\"730\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For guests invited to a British wedding ceremony, \u201cit\u2019s the pit of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/lifestyle\/top-10-wedding-gift-rules-you-should-know\/06\/08\/\" class=\"broken_link\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad manners not to give a gift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d \u2014 even if the couple insists they don\u2019t want one or guests have to travel a long way, according to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The London Economic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what kind of gift is acceptable in British culture? In other words, it\u2019s not uncalled-for or a sign of disrespect to the newlyweds or their families if guests don\u2019t give enough, like it is in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Japan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59587 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/rehearsaluploads.withjoy.com\/uploads\/uploads\/riccardo-trimeloni-609369-unsplash-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"wedding gift traditions japan\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Japan, and in many other Asian countries, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goshug<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i (\u3054\u795d\u5100) \u2014 or money gift \u2014 is the tradition and the norm at weddings, stemming from a long list of unspoken rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guests bring special \u201ccelebration envelopes\u201d filled with money, and the amount is based on the giver\u2019s social status \u2014 for example, a boss can sometimes be expected to give more than a coworker. Women may give less because they are expected to pay for makeup, dress, hair, and accessories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While exact amounts can also vary based on guests\u2019 personal or financial means and their relationship to the couple, \u201con average\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/differences-american-weddings-japanese-weddings-2018-2#no-stressing-over-a-wedding-registry-for-a-wedding-gift-cash-is-king-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$300 is a good amount<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a single person who is not especially close,\u201d which equals about 30,000 yen.
