{"id":77743,"date":"2022-05-18T10:20:10","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T17:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/withjoy.com\/blog\/?p=77743"},"modified":"2022-05-18T10:24:48","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T17:24:48","slug":"inclusive-wedding-glossary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/withjoy.com\/blog\/inclusive-wedding-glossary\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Guide to Planning an LGBTQ+ Inclusive Wedding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Weddings are a joyous occasion for couples and their guests, but all too often in the wedding industry non-inclusive terminology puts a damper on the big day for LGBTQ+ couples and their loved ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t sit right with us, which is why we\u2019ve developed an Inclusive Wedding Glossary to serve as a guide to creating an inclusive and joyful wedding experience for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inclusive-wedding-glossary\"><strong>Inclusive Wedding Glossary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bride and Groom \u2192 \u201cNearlyweds\u201d or \u201cTo-be-weds\u201d<ul><li>Designed to replace the heteronormative \u201cbride and groom\u201d phrase and implies that someone is engaged without being specific to any gender identity.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Bridal Suite \u2192 Wedding Suite<ul><li>Preparing for the ceremony can involve many loved ones and this term keeps it general to anyone close to the nearlyweds.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Bridal Shower \u2192 Wedding Shower<ul><li>Everyone deserves a shower before their big day, and this term keeps it universal to whomever is celebrating before the big \u201cI do\u2019s.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Bridal Party \/ Bridesmaids + Groomsmen \u2192 Wedding Party<ul><li>This phrase ensures that everyone helping to celebrate the nearlyweds feels valued and included, and represents the people standing by the side of the nearlyweds on their big day.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Bachelorette Party \u2192 Nearlywed Party<ul><li>This phrase allows all persons to have fun with their wedding party before the big day and keeps the celebration inclusive.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Best Man\/Maid of Honor \u2192 Best Person + Person of Honor<ul><li>These terms keep it gender-neutral while still highlighting the people of importance at your wedding.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Father\/Daughter Dance + Mother\/Son Dance \u2192 Family Dance&nbsp;<ul><li>This dance symbolizes a celebration with your family and this term can include every family member.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Flower Girl \u2192 Flower Person\/ Flower Child<ul><li>This refreshed term allows for flexibility and inclusivity., whether it be an adult or someone who identifies with a different gender.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Groom\u2019s Cake \u2192 Second Cake&nbsp;<ul><li>This tradition is a fun way for one partner to celebrate the other after the main cake tasting, so it is also fitting to call it the \u201csecond cake.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>\u201cYou may kiss the bride\u201d \u2192 \u201cYou may kiss your partner\u201d<ul><li>This famous phrase often concludes the ceremony and this makes it gender neutral while continuing to celebrate the union.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>\u201cPlease welcome for the first time, Mr. and Mrs&#8230;\u201d \u2192 \u201cPlease welcome the newlyweds\u201d<ul><li>This announcement is an exciting time for the couple to officially be married and this phrase keeps the meaning and excitement while including all couples.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Making these inclusive changes to your wedding terminology creates an inclusive, joyful space for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, here are a few helpful tips for planning an LGBTQ+ inclusive wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Address Pronouns through Your Wedding Website.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the Q&amp;A section of your wedding website to express your preferred pronouns.
