Story
Abby was walking home from her 8 a.m. class at U.C. Berkeley. She was polite when she met her friend’s classmate, Doug, but her mind was set on rushing home for a power nap.
Doug, on the other hand, wanted to know more about this girl. He bravely messaged Abby on Facebook that evening, and they started talking. Their chemistry was instantaneous, and they were soon talking every day.
As they got to know each other, they discovered they were both from Hong Kong and had attended the same kindergarten. What are the odds!
Abby was very dedicated to her studies, and their first "date" was at the library. According to Doug, Abby was studying the entire time.
They finally made their relationship official on December 6, 2011.
As their relationship deepened, they found many common interests, including their family-oriented mindset as well as their love for music.
They’ve also rubbed off on each other. Doug has taught Abby to expand her palate, and Abby has turned Doug into a dog lover.
During Covid, Doug planned a secret proposal and enlisted their siblings’ help. After an unusually long grocery run with her sister, Abby arrived home to find candles and balloons everywhere, with romantic music playing in the background. Doug popped the question, and Abby happily said yes!
Tidbits
What was your most memorable date?
Doug: Abby invited me to a study session at a library. I ended up pretending to study just to hang out with her.
Abby: I remember our first brunch together at a Thai restaurant. We went at 10AM, in between morning classes. Doug ordered a table worth of food, and I thought we would never be able to eat that much.
What's your favorite activity together?
Doug: We love taking long walks with our dogs (Simba and Captain) along the Embarcadero!
Abby: I love having DMCs (Deep Meaningful Conversations) with Doug, which Urban Dictionary defines as talking for a while until you feel better. My parents and my best friends can testify that I need a lot of these!
The most spontaneous thing we’ve done
Doug & Abby: We spontaneously got our second dog, Captain, after coming across a cute puppy photo of him. We had been looking for a brother for Simba for a while, and when we saw Captain, we knew we had to make him part of the family. Doug called the breeder the next day, and in a matter of hours, Captain was on the way! It was one of the best decisions we've ever made. :)
The dorkiest thing about us is
Doug & Abby: We are serious homebodies who enjoy binging Asian dramas on weekends. Don't judge!
What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?
Doug: In the Summer of 2017, we traveled to Maui for our first getaway trip. We snorkeled, dined on the beach, and visited the same poke shop three times!
Abby: I loved our trip to Boston. We were smart enough to book a red-eye flight, and we landed at 5AM when nothing was open! We were so tired that we ended up taking turns napping at a community supermarket. Some of the highlights of this trip included taking Doug around my high school and visiting my favorite ice-cream shop!
What Do You Love About Your S.O.?
Doug: I love Abby’s personality. She is hardworking and tries her best at everything she does. She is kind and considerate to her family and friends, and she always makes me smile. Our different backgrounds and personalities allow us to have a deep connection. We talk every day and never run out of things to say to one another.
Abby: Doug is a very genuine person, and I have felt comfortable with him since day one. He is one of the happiest and most romantic people I know. He makes special celebration plans for us and has taken me to many cool places.
How do you complement each other
Doug: We make a great team because of the differences in our personalities. At work, Abby is thoughtful, while I am decisive. On weekends, she is spontaneous, while I over plan every date.
Abby: Doug is a very analytical, rational, numbers guy. I am more qualitative and intuitive. We can appreciate our differences, and enjoy being silly together and poking fun at each other.
