If you decide to fly to another city or country before/after the wedding, flights within Europe tend to be cheaper!

Q & A

Have questions? Take a look at our Q&A below. Feel free to reach out to Emily or Andy with additional questions.

Habt ihr Fragen?

Sendet eure Fragen an Andy unter akunkel@vt.edu

What is the Tegernsee?

Tegernsee is a resort town in Bavaria, Germany, on the shore of Tegernsee lake. Surrounding it is the forested Tegernsee Valley in the Bavarian Alps, laced with ski trails, toboggan runs and footpaths. With one of the most beautiful lakes in Germany and trains running hourly to/from Munich, we know it'll be an incredible trip for everyone!

What will the weather be like?

The average temperature in Gmund am Tegernsee in June ranges from a high of 70°F (21°C) to a low of 50°F (10°C). Plan on layering clothes and definitely pack an umbrella/raincoat!

I am coming from out of town. Where should I stay?

Everyone is! Please see our Travel section for details on hotel room blocks.

When is the RSVP deadline?

As soon as possible! We request RSVPs to be submitted by January 31, 2024.

Is there transportation being provided between reception and hotels?

Yes, please see our Travel/Schedule pages for more information on shuttle. Please note, if you choose to drive yourself there is plenty of parking available at the venue. There are also cabs available in Tegernsee.

Can I bring a date?

Please check your invite to see if you have a +1.

We know many of you will be traveling with other friends and family. While our venue for the wedding ceremony and reception has limited space, we would love to celebrate with them at the Welcome Lunch!

What should I wear?

Please see our Schedule for more details on the dress code.

At the Welcome Lunch, we encourage anyone who is interested to wear Tracht (more info below).

For the Wedding, aim for semi-formal or dressy casual - ultimately, we want everyone to be comfortable and ready to celebrate!

For men, think button downs and slacks. No need for a suit jacket - that takes up a lot of luggage space!
For women, think sundresses, rompers, etc.

Everyone is traveling, so try to bring something you might wear again to a nice dinner.

What is Tracht?

Tracht is a German word that refers to traditional clothing in German-speaking countries, particularly Bavaria. It translates to "what is carried/worn/borne."

Tracht for men includes:
- Lederhosen
- Vest or bodice
Tracht for women includes:
- Dirndl
- Long skirt with a matching apron
- Blouse with puffed sleeves

For our Welcome Lunch, we encourage everyone to buy or rent Tracht to celebrate! However, you are also more than welcome to come casually in whatever clothing you have!

What is a Polterabend?

Polterabend is a German wedding custom where on the night before the wedding, guests break porcelain to bring luck to the couple's marriage.

We are so thrilled that the restaurant for our Welcome Lunch has agreed to let us do this tradition! Guests are welcomed and encouraged to bring their own porcelain - a quick trip to GoodWill or a consignment store for something that will fit in your suitcase! However, we will have some available at the venue!

Will food be served at the Welcome Lunch and/or Wedding?

YES! Please come hungry, we will have a lot of food and drinks to enjoy at both events.

Is the wedding indoors or outdoors?

Our ceremony will be outdoors and the reception will be indoors with access to an outdoor terrace. In the event it rains, the ceremony will be moved indoors.

Will the Welcome Lunch be indoors or outdoors?

We will have the full restaurant, which includes both indoor and outdoor space.

Is it okay to take pictures with our phones and cameras during the wedding?

Yes! We would love for you to take photos and share them on our app Joy (available in App Store and Google Play Store).
We will also have a wonderful photographer and will share their professional pictures after the wedding.

Whom should I call with questions?

Feel free to reach out to us via email or phone prior to the wedding with any questions!

Things to Do In Germany

Story

We met the classic DC way - through a dating app!

It all started over brunch at Chef Geoff's in Tenleytown near Emily's job at American University. Andy arrived ready to watch the Germany-Mexico World Cup game in his jersey.

Biggest takeaways? Andy was impressed Emily split the bill; Emily was shocked she got a second date after that devastating 0-1 loss!

What followed was 4.5 years of new jobs and apartments, two kittens, trips around the world, and thousands of memories with friends and each other.

In September of 2022 we flew to Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest with friends (shoutout to Chestnut Ferguson). On our way to Austria for a family trip, Andy led Emily on a hike up to Neuschwanstein Castle and proposed.

Our first trip to Germany in 2019 is where we fell in love; our second trip in 2022 is where we got engaged. We can't wait for our next trip in 2024 to get married and celebrate with all of you!

Registry

We want to make sure celebrating our wedding is as accessible as possible to all of our loved ones. Whether that's buying your plane ticket to Germany, exploring our registry, dropping us a lovely card, or toasting to us at your next meal - we love and appreciate all of the support, however it may look for you!
