Consider These Hotels Closer to Home!
Flying Into New York
We recommend flying into either John F. Kennedy International Airport or LaGuardia Airport. Both of these are located on Long Island in Queens NY, and will take you 0.5-1.5 hours to reach our home depending on traffic. So, if feasible, avoid arriving during peak rush hour traffic at approximately 3pm-7pm ET.
While LGA and JFK are recommended based on driving time to our home (or your prospective hotel) and flight availability, other options are Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark New Jersey, or Long Island Macarthur Airport. Macarthur will likely have limited and expensive flights, but it's worth a look!
Please note that our shaadi falls on Memorial Day weekend, a holiday weekend in the US, so we highly recommend booking as early as possible to avoid paying an arm and a leg for tickets!!
Use the LIRR to get around Long Island and into NYC!
If you are looking for the most efficient and cost-effective way to get into the city, then we highly recommend riding the Long Island Rail Road which has lines that run across the island and travel into midtown Manhattan at Penn Station or Grand Central Madison Station. The two closest stations to our house are Bethpage and Hicksville. Parking garages are expensive and street parking is difficult to find, so while you can drive, we highly recommend taking the train into the city. We highly suggest you download the MTA TrainTime app on your phone, where you can see train schedules and fares, and buy tickets online. Be sure to activate the tickets when you get on board as the conductor will check on trains heading to NYC.
If you are traveling east, then there is no issue with driving. However, the LIRR does run east as well to Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, Montauk, etc. Additionally, if you are feeling adventurous and would like to explore Westchester and Connecticut, then the Metro-North Railroad runs north from Grand Central Station in Midtown Manhattan.
Getting Around NYC: Subway, Buses, Bikes
Once you're in the city, there is no better way to get around than using the subway. Navigating the subway can be confusing for first-timers, so we recommend using Google Maps to help guide you to which specific lines to take and where the closest station is. Google Maps will also tell you when the next train is arriving at your station. If you are riding into Penn Station, then the A,C,E, and 1,2,3 subway lines are connected underground. The Grand Central Madison Station is connected to the 4,5,6,7, and S lines. When navigating the subway it is important to remember whether you are going uptown (north) or downtown (south), as that will allow you to follow the correct signs and end up on the right side of the platform!!
Subway service routes change slightly on the weekends and during late night service (starting 12am), so it is important to be aware of this as we are expecting you Memorial Day weekend!
All subway stations use contactless pay (Apple/Android pay etc.). However, the MetroCard* is still able to be used if you are distrustful of technology or are seeking the classic subway experience. Kiosks are available in stations where you can buy MetroCards ($1) or add money to existing cards. The subway fare is currently $2.90, and you pay the fare at turnstiles before you board the train. You don’t have to do anything after.
While the subway is definitely the most efficient mode of transportation in the city, if you prefer to travel above ground, then feel free to use the MTA bus service which uses the same payment system as the subway ($7 for express buses). Use Google Maps to find the nearest bus station for your destination and you're on your way!
NYC weather in late May is beautiful, so if you are up for it, then feel free to explore the city on a bike using the CitiBike system! Just download the CitiBike app and follow the directions.
*MetroCards can also be used with other regional transit partners: PATH, AirTrain JFK, NICE Bus (Nassau Inter-County Express), Westchester Bee-Line Buses, and the Roosevelt Island Tram.
