How We Met

Cynthia and Jamon, (unofficially) met while attending SUNY Cortland’s annual CSA (Caribbean Student Association) Halloween Party in 2016. This was B.C (before Christ) ya’ll. He saw a girl dressed as a chola and quickly asked Lima, the campus’s mother who she was. Lima said, “Oh, that's Cynthia from LFL (La Familia Latina)”. And so it began. He was working security rounds for the party and decided to take one round early. But, checking for drunk, passed out students didn’t seem as fun as getting to know this beautiful woman. So, he walked up to her and asked Cynthia out to dance without saying a word. I guess actions do, in fact, speak louder than words. And Cynthia was left thinking, “What was that all about?”

They officially met days later in the library while Cynthia was studying with Esosa (a classmate). Knowing Esosa, he decided to use her to break the ice and formally introduced himself to Cynthia. That day marked the beginning of those library dates and after a few of them, they’d start a beautiful, life long journey together. Today, if you were to run into them, they’d still be studying but, now about The Word of GOD. They’d also be watching their favorite shows (The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Boruto, Attack on Titan, & This Is Us) as well as having meaningful/impactful conversations just as they did in the beginning.

Tidbits

What was your most memorable date?

It was 2020, during the height of the pandemic. We couldn't go outside due to the lockdown and so we had to get a little creative for our anniversary. We took a table up to Cynthia's room, used a white bed sheet as our tablecloth, added her fake roses as a centerpiece, lit some candles and ordered our college favorite... pineapple and sausage PIZZA! We played music, talked and exchanging gifts under a YouTube hour long fireplace video (with sound). Sometimes, you just have to make it do what it do.

We’re on the same page about

Our faith in the Triune GOD, YHWH (Father, Son (Jesus Christ) & Holy Spirit).

The corkiest thing about us is...

Jamon often spaces out and dances in his head. He also makes songs out of everything.
Cynthia always spills food on herself when eating & she loves to do this silly, happy feet dance when she's excited.

A social cause we care about

Cynthia is very passionate about educating, counseling and encouraging people to live a renewed and purpose filled life.
Jamon is very passionate about helping the Christians in the Arabian Peninsula who are being massacred due to their religious ideology.

What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?

Hands down, our trip to Playa Del Carmen for Gonzalo & Irene's Wedding. It was Jamon's first time out of the country. While everyone was enjoying cocktail hour, Jamon had this desire to walk to the shore. As he looked out at the sea Cynthia held Jamon and he just cried because he had accomplished something that not many from his neighborhood ever do. Where he's from, many people don't make it past 21 or leave "the block" and so, to leave the country was a great accomplishment. Forever grateful to my family for that opportunity.
