FROM JD:
As with many young adults these days, I was trying to meet single women via online dating apps. Things weren’t really working out that well — I had quite a few Tinder dates that didn’t go well. Seeing an ad on Facebook, I downloaded the Coffee Meets Bagel app, and liked it because it seemed serious about matching people to start long-term relationships. I also liked that I could set my preference for Christian girls, which was a deal breaker for me.
When I matched with Kristin, we had only exchanged a few messages before I asked if she would like to meet up. I am awful at conversing via text message, so I wanted to meet in person before I blew it. Also, after many failed dinner dates (I’m a messy eater), I wanted to do something fun for a first date. I asked her if she had any ideas of what to do.
Kristin had her own agenda, though. She didn’t want to meet someone until she had vetted them thoroughly. After I asked to meet up, she started asking the real deep questions, like “where do you see yourself in 5 years?” I told her that I would probably be on a different team and that I would be married. So far, both of those are coming true! I guess I passed her test because she agreed to go out with me.
Kristin had the wonderful idea to meet at a pinball bar for our first date. I had a blast, and didn’t embarrass myself too badly (I did spill a drink, but we cleaned it up). We both wanted to go on a second date, so we did a triple date with us, Scott & Tarah, and Sara & Kevin to play trivia at a bar. Everyone got along, and it was fun!
Kristin was great about coming up with fun activities for us to do. She’s definitely a planner, and I’m happy to do whatever. We went to movies at cool theaters, plays, concerts, festivals, etc. The date that really hooked me was when she made me dinner at her apartment and played “Hallelujah” on the piano.
Having not been in a relationship that lasted longer than a few months, I was getting nervous when we hit the 6 month mark and the 1-year mark. I wanted to be intentional about the relationship and make sure we were right for each other. But with Kristin, there is very little cause for concern, and she is such a caring person, I could not help but fall in love with her. We have grown a lot together, and are both looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together.

FROM KRISTIN:
After our first date, JD left for a trip home to Atlanta for over a week and I remember thinking I wasn’t going to “bother” him and would just see what happened. (Meaning not playing hard to get, but not pursuing him either) I was excited when I heard from him asking about my weekend and it helped spark my interest in him. After a series of clever well planned dates by yours truly, we were still going steady yet JD had not made a move. I knew it was time to pull out the "big guns"... my slightly above average cooking skills and musical talents (piano/singing). It paid off because I finally got my first goodnight kiss from him!
From there we quickly grew close, going to various Christmas festivities together, spending Christmas day together, then taking weekend excursions to Deception Pass or Portland. JD was always game for an adventure, and would go tit for tat on questions, never shying away from all of my relationship/life questions. He was willing to answer my 5 year plan question before our first date, discuss our love languages (which he actually brought up at the same time as me!), do the "36 questions that lead to love", and take a pre-engagement class through my old church. We were both serious about finding a lifelong partner that was aligned on morals and values, our faith, and our goals in life. We wanted to nurture our relationship to build a strong foundation, taking our time to ensure we found our forever person.
We have shared hobbies with each other (sailing, hiking, volleyball/husker volleyball) and have traveled together to more places than I can count! (weddings to Las Vegas and Buffalo, vacations to Hawaii and Thailand, work trip to Munich, Germany, etc). And with each new experience, our love for each other has grown deeper and stronger.
I love that JD is thoughtful, open to any idea, goofy and weird, but also brilliant. I love him so much that it hurts sometimes. I’m so excited to start our life together as a married couple and cannot wait for all of our adventures yet to come.
Tidbits
How did JD propose?
Jon Cruse, the owner of Freja, invited a bunch of folks to come out on his other boat for the Christmas Ship Parade on Lake Union (just north of downtown Seattle). The highlight of the "parade" is when the Argosy cruise company brings the Seattle Choir on one of their boats and they have speakers to blast the lake with Christmas carols. After the caroling, JD asked a friend on the boat to take some pictures of them, and that's when he popped the question.
Did Kristin know that JD was going to propose?
JD figured that, since Kristin is going to be wearing the ring for the rest of her life, it would be wise to have her pick our the exact ring she wanted. So, Kristin did know that JD had the ring, although she claims that she was not expecting him to propose that night (she thought it would happen the next day, on Christmas Eve).
How did you first meet?
We met on the Coffee Meets Bagel dating app!
What was your most memorable date?
(from JD) That date when I really fell for Kristin was when she cooked dinner for me and then played Hallelujah on the piano. It was very romantic.
(from Kristin) The 3 Google Christmas parties we have attended together!
What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?
Definitely that trip to Thailand we did in February 2020.
What's your favorite activity together?
Definitely sailing ;) or watching Nebraska Volleyball...! Family time is the best too :)
Where are you going for your honeymoon?
TBD
(from Kristin) Someplace warm with minimal planning required ;)
What's the best meal you have eaten together?
Everything that Kristin makes is the best :)
Seriously, though, she makes a really good BBQ pizza on some Pillsbury pizza crust. She has also started making tomato soup with additional vegetables (e.g. carrots, bell peppers) blended together. They are very good.
(from Kristin) Food from Thailand or any of our travels, has been generally so yummy!
Schedule
Q & A
What should I wear?
The dress code is semi-formal. Sorry we forgot to include it on the invite!
What about Covid-19?
In the event that large gatherings are prohibited in October, we will still get married but have a smaller wedding/reception based upon current restrictions. Please check back here for updates as any changes to our plans, we will post here. We will also send out some form of communication (e.g. email, mail) in addition to posting here for any significant changes.
Covid-19 Details
We want our wedding ceremony and reception to be safe for us and all our loved ones. We will be following all state, church, and venue guidelines regarding COVID-19 in addition to adding our own safety restrictions. There will be hand sanitizer available for all guests in addition to doing frequent hand washing. There is increased spacing between tables and restricted table sizes. We hope to keep tables to same households and/or guests who are close friends to one another. When you are at your table is when you can eat and drink (and take your mask off! Whew!). We are still sorting out how the bride and groom will greet all of our guests, but we ask that everyone limit physical contact (e.g. hugs, handshakes, physical contact while dancing) to same household or to individuals that have given you permission. Keep in mind your distance from other guests as much as possible.
What are the venues like (regarding Covid)?
Sacred Heart Catholic Church is limiting attendance to 37 "households" (or pods). Pods consist of people who are comfortable being in closer proximity to one another. Members of a pod will sit together, and pods will be distanced throughout the Church.
The Scoular Ballroom has a seated capacity of 300 people, but we expect around 100 people to attend. This should give us ample space to socially distance. We will have hand sanitizer stations throughout and will have spare masks in case anyone misplaces theirs. We ask that everyone wear masks unless they are at their table with their pod. We plan on having ~6 people at each table and minimizing the number of pods per table (ideally 1 pod per table). For dinner, we are having a buffet but staff will be serving the food onto the plates. There is no outside area at the ballroom.
Do I have to wear a mask?
We will be following a universal masking policy and ask that you wear a mask at all times, except when you are at your designated table. A mask will be required at the church and at the reception. Masks will be provided but feel free to bring your own.
There may be a few exceptions when the Bride and Groom will not be wearing masks, such as walking down the aisle, at the altar (distanced away from congregation), or during first dance.
What is the deal with the COVID-19 waiver?
This is a requirement by our venue. If you do not meet the requirements and sign the waiver, you will not be able to attend. Of course we want all of our loved ones there, but we also want everyone to be safe and healthy. More details to follow regarding waiver, but it will include requirements like verifying you are not experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms, have not come into contact with anyone who is a know positive in last 14 days, and have not traveled internationally in the last 14 days. We are taking COVID-19 very seriously and ask that you do so as well.
Note: people whose profession potentially brings them into contact with Covid-19-positive individuals are exempt. We understand that many people's livelihoods (teachers, medical professionals, etc.) potentially put them in contact with COVID-19 patients. This will not deny someone entry into the building.
Will the wedding be livestreamed?
The ceremony will be streamed on YouTube! youtu.be/L3wWA3-fEh4
What's the deal with the app?
The app is a convenient way to access the latest information about the wedding. Kristin and I can send a push notification to the app in case of any last-minute changes. The code to access the wedding was included on your invitation. See the link at the bottom of this page to download it!
What is your favorite TV show?
We both really enjoyed watching Dollhouse, which was directed by Joss Whedon, who wrote Avengers: Age of Ultron and created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Whedon's shows are notorious for getting canceled, but they are very good. We recommend watching the "Epitaph" episodes after you finish both seasons.
