Some say that the history of the red envelope dates back to Han Dynasty in China. The red envelope is called 'hong bao' in Mandarin or 'ang pow' in Hokkien and represents good fortune, luck, and prosperity. For weddings, hong bao featuring Chinese characters for 'double happiness' are most commonly used.
