Story

Our story started off in an unusual way and on an unusual day (Mother’s Day). If it wasn’t for my fraternity brother inviting me to his grandmother’s home that day, I would have never met Joyce. Joyce works in the medical field, and at the time was completing her Masters of Nursing from California State University,LA. I worked in banking, while being completely consumed with a custody battle, as well as dealing with a boss who spent more time in Washington D.C. campaigning for the historical bank bailout. Our lives were very busy. Nonetheless, Joyce walked into my fraternity’s brother’s grandmother’s home, helped her grandmother (Irene) find a comfortable seat, and proceeded to walk right past me to go study in the kitchen. I was in disbelief that she didn’t look at me or say hi. I sat there for 10 minutes wondering what just happened. I concluded that she must’ve not realized her oversight. I quickly got up, adjusted my bowtie, and walked into the kitchen and introduced myself, “Hello, my name is Ricky Jackson and you are?”. She looked up, said hello and went back to studying. I returned to my seat thinking the decision to walk into the kitchen was perhaps one of my best auditing assignments of the year.
We didn’t see each other again until Father’s Day, when the same fraternity brother invited me to his home to watch the game and to celebrate the event. Joyce sat across from me, and my fraternity brother’s wife invited Joyce to come sit next to me. Joyce wore a beautiful summer dress, and I enjoyed taking several glances at her nice legs. At the end of the evening, I asked my fraternity brother to give her my number. When my frat tried to give her my number, she told him to have him call her. I called a few days later and we talked for a very long time... as they say, the rest is history.

Tidbits

The Proposal

Rick proposed on the early morning of April 24, 2021 while we were on vacation at the Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal in Riviera Maya, Mexico. He had already asked all the important men in my life for their blessing prior to our trip, unbeknownst to me. We had a late dinner with several friends to celebrate a close friend’s 50th birthday. As we all walked back to our rooms after midnight, Rick said let’s walk out to the beach. He had chosen the song “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran which was playing on his phone as we walked hand in hand to the beach. Once we were close to the water, he got on one knee and opened the ring box which had a built-in light and asked me to marry him. I was shocked by the proposal and the stunning ring that he picked out, since he says that I didn’t give him any ideas on what I liked. I asked Rick to give me the ring he wanted me to have. I later found out that I had asked him to accomplish the most challenging task. Finding me a ring. Rick said I didn’t even let him finish asking me before I said YES!!! It was so romantic.

Who made the first move? How?

Rick made the first move when he walked in the kitchen and then again when he called me a few days after Father’s Day. Our first date was breakfast at a restaurant in Culver City; a restaurant he often took his kids to. Rick was fashionably late, and it appeared that every piece of garment he had on had either a hole or paint on it.

Who's going to take out the trash?

Whoever happens to be closer to the trash :)

What was your most memorable date?

One of your most memorable dates was when Rick took me to Maestro’s for a 5-course dinner and his friend who was the head chef came out to greet us after dinner. Afterwards, we went to a jazz club.

What's your favorite activity together?

We love to go for walks in the park or on a trail, golfing and dancing together. Spending time in our backyard looking at our beautiful view of downtown Los Angeles.

Where are you going for your honeymoon?

Anywhere that’s warm and beautiful

What's the best meal you have eaten together?

On Valentine’s Day, Joyce and her friend planned a private 4-course dinner catered by a private chef. The menu included spinach artichoke cup appetizers, and garden salad w/bread sticks. The entree was a twice baked Potato, oven roasted Broccoli, and steak in creamy Cajun Shrimp Sauce. For dessert we had cheesecakes and chocolate covered strawberries. The evening was topped off with a private concert around the fireplace.

What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?

We stayed at the Casa Munras Garden hotel and Spa in Monterey, CA. Originally built in 1824 as a sprawling hacienda with adobe walls. The hotel resort features a gracious, old-world design and beautiful gardens that reflect its Spanish heritage. Huge outdoor fireplace, the endless bottles of wine and golfing among some of the most beautiful Red Wood trees made this one of the most memorable trips. On the last day of the trip one of our dearest friends joined us for dinner on the pier.

We’re on the same page about

What's important to us. Our relationship with God. Spending time with family and the people we love most. (You all!).

Registry

More than just kisses so far we've shared,
our home has been made with love and care.
Most things we need we've already got,
And in our home we can't fit a lot.
With your blessings, our "Wishing Well" will be set!
It will help us build our backyard deck!
A monetary donation to our Wishing well would be great,
but only if you wish to participate.
