Our Story
Hi there. I'm Kat.
It all started at work. I joined Betterment and met the team. That's how I first met Alan. I thought he was funny, I guess. But, I didn't look twice. I mean, not until we started hanging out a couple years later. And I haven't looked away since!
Is that too corny? š Oh, I don't know what to say. Alan can take it from here ā he's the storyteller.
āāā
Alright. Let's do this thing.
«In a pirate voice» 'Twas a dark & stormy night. We were all huddled close around the campfire, when someone said, "Captain! Tell us a story!" So the Captain said, "'Twas a dark & stormy night. We... Oh?
Ok. Kat's yelling at me. I'll get on with it.
Kat joined Betterment in 2012 and introduced herself as the first UX designer. I assume I said, "Hello," with a wave, and went back to whatever I was doing.
That's it. That's the story of how we met. I presume it's not exactly the thrilling tale you came here to read. Honestly, we didn't really paid much attention to each other for a while. A more interesting story is how became friends and, eventually, inseparable.
I first knew that my life would be better if I spent more time with Kat on a warm summer day in Cape Cod.
Kat hopped off a banana-seat bicycle, noticeably drunk, in a Betterment hoody. She sat on the grass near me, drawn to the spectacle of two grown men tackling each other in inflatable āsumo suits.ā After a few minutes, she leans over and whispers, āI have hot dogs in my pocket. ... And salad in my hood. šā
That is the moment I knew. Thatās when I knew that Iād marry her.
No, of course not. But, that is the moment she caught my attention. I realized that I wanted to spend as much time with her as I could, preferably in the very near future.
So, thatās what I did. We spent long weekends binging Bobās Burgers and The League. Weeknights, I'd come over to cook fried chicken. During the week, we'd coordinate to get ice cream at Eataly between meetings. We couldnāt get enough of one another.
Then, after a few short months, I found myself sitting across from Kat in a crČpe restaurant in Williamsburg. I, the pragmatist, and she, the dreamer, discussed whether we would ādate.ā After all, office romances are, well, fraught. Either things would end in a tumultuous, furious tempest of rage and tears ā or we would go all the way.
I'm very happy that it was the latter. I canāt imagine a life without her.
Hereās to the next phase of our adventure together.

Tidbits
Who made the first move? How?
I guess Alan made "the first move." He texted me to ask if I wanted to hang out & watch cartoons. I mean, "Yes. Duh." And then we made fried chicken and jalapeƱo poppers.
What's your favorite activity together?
Most of our fondest memories involve cooking and sharing food with one another. Making "Lemon-in-the-Butt Chicken" and watching a movie is our go-to date night.
Where are you going for your honeymoon?
Hopefully a place with forests and beaches. Hawaii sounds nice this time of year.
What's the best meal you have eaten together?
Resto in Reykjavik, Iceland. Jungsik in Tribeca, New York City. Both are so good, they'll bring you to tears.
What was your most memorable experience together?
Alan: Really, really tough choice. Either swimming with sea lion pups off the coast of Argentina or exploring the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave in Belize. Both are incredibly happy, exhilarating memories.
Kat: Making the completely ice-covered climb to the top of the Skógafoss waterfall in Iceland. I'm terribly afraid of heights. It was terrifying & exciting all mixed together.
Weekend Schedule
Q & A
For all our friends and family who have lots of questions, please check out our Q & A first!
When is the RSVP deadline?
Today! Let us know ASAP if you can't make it.
Can I bring a date?
Yes, we planned the wedding so everyone has a partner in crime.
Where should I park?
There is a parking lot at The DeBruce out front, but space is limited to ~10 cars or so. If you need additional parking, it's available around back. However, a shuttle bus should be able to take you where you need to go.
Are the ceremony and reception locations wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately no. Please let us know if you have a wheelchair and we'll work with the DeBruce to see what we can do.
What kind of shoes should/shouldn't I wear?
Given the wedding ceremony will be outside, please use your best judgement in choosing footwear. Wedges or flats will be much more practical than heels, given the terrain.
Is there transportation being provided between reception and hotels?
Yes, on Friday and Saturday we're providing buses so everyone can enjoy a few cocktails.
Whom should I call with questions?
Good question. Please call Alan at 248-667-8662. Day of, please call our coordinator, Ainsley, at 510-666-5618
What if I have a dietary restriction?
All dishes do not contain nuts or nut products. There are plenty of vegetarian & pescatarian options. AG, JD ā we got you.
