Story

So an anime character and a ringmaster walked into a rave...

He Said, She Said

How did you first meet?

It was 2 AM on Halloween 2015 and we were both meeting our dear friend, Adam Fried at a Halloween party deep in Brooklyn. Adam was dressed as Kaneda from Akira (the must-see seminal anime film) and Kimmy was dressed as a Circus Ringmaster -- whip and all. Our eyes met across the room and we were pulled toward each other. Whilst saying our awkward hellos, we went to kiss on the cheek and both accidentally leaned in the same direction. Landing on the lips, our brains short circuited.

Who made the first move? How?

KS: Technically him. Adam asked me to dance, but I suggested we get out of the literal rave we were in to go someplace a little more quiet (sorry Moms).

AM: It was me for sure. I asked her to dance and felt overcome, then suggesting that we change locations, ordering a high-margin Halloween Uber (6x). We shared our love of music, DJ'ing the whole way back. I kissed her goodnight at her doorstep and sent flowers the next day.

KS: Yeah, okay.

What was your most memorable date?

KS: After a little time apart, I asked Adam to dinner for his birthday and he picked an underground sushi restaurant in New York (you walk through an office building lobby in midtown and down a stairwell into a gorgeous restaurant.) Before I could see Adam, I could literally smell him and that's when I knew.

AM: At our most memorable date, Kimmy was actually 3,000 miles away. 6 months after leaving my job, I felt a bit lost. To put me on a path, Kimmy created one in the form of a mysterious week-long scavenger hunt called "The Hunt." Followed by clue-giving strangers and prompted to read, write and explore, my first day ended most memorably. I arrived home to 2 private chefs, silently preparing a themed meal accompanied by Blue Milk libations, while The Force Awakens unfurled before me. It was a bliss that could only have been improved by her presence.

What's your favorite activity together?

KS: We love to travel together and joke that all of our vacations are like a honeymoon. Our first big trip was to the North of Finland to see the Northern Lights. The hotel was warning us that after not seeing the lights for two weeks, there was little chance we would be able to see them and told me not to get my hopes up. We saw them 4 out of the 5 nights we were in Saariselkä - it was incredibly magical.

AM: We love to sweat. Kimmy took me to my first ever Soul Cycle, and it remains one of my favorite ways to start any day together. Fueled by endorphins and a calorie deficit, it heightens the pleasure of the remaining day - from simple strolling, hand in hand, to the decadent bucatini that we earned.

What's the best meal you have eaten together?

KS: My Dad was a chef and like all good Italians, we love to feed people. So as part of my conversion process...I decided to learn traditional Jewish cooking and have been learning Syrian dishes (Adam's mom's side of the family is Syrian!) from my fabulous chef friend, Jennifer Abadi. After one Friday morning lesson, we hosted Adam's whole family for Shabbat dinner making all of Adam's favorite dishes like kibbeh cherry, lahem ba'jean, vegetable i'jeh, hummus, fatoosh and some of my own takes on dessert. I even went to J.Levine to "Jewish-ize" the house with mezuzahs, shabbat candles and a new kiddush cup so that we could do the proper prayers. Everyone was so excited and I literally watched everyone try everything to make sure I did each dish right.

AM: The Italian meal prepared by her family in Crotone, Italy. Homemade bucatini Bolognese, farm grape wine, and pollo from the barn 20 feet north. It was such a pleasure and an honor to devour rich treats made with love from a side of Kimmy's family an ocean a way but so close to our hearts. I fell in love and proud of the beauty and passion that Kimmy's heritage will bring to our family.

How did you propose?

AM: On April 24th, I found the perfect ring, and was struck with Proposal Fever. On April 25th, I won Jack and Lisa's permission to marry their daughter. After vetting the concept with LisaMarie and my mom, the Proposal Plan sprung into motion. May 4th was the target date - a small assembly of Kimmy's friends at our apartment to celebrate her 33rd Birthday. I spent the week re-writing the lyrics to Kimmy's favorite song - This Must Be the Place by the Talking Heads. Following the birthday dinner, LisaMarie escorted our guest to the terrace for a "surprise performance." A Cappella backing track led by Niko Liakaris, I proceeded to musically celebrate / roast the Subject, standing on the table and proclaiming my love for all of Flatiron. The last verse, sung without accompaniment, ended with a knee, a ring, and a "Yes."
