Mackenzie & Wills

are getting married! #iDOon222

The Masonic Temple Detroit, Michigan

Under the Radio Tower

Wills and Mackenzie met while braving life in the pre-Shinola Cass Corridor (aka Midtown). Their apartment buildings shared a parking lot. Wills' apartment was newer, nicer, and swankier in every way imaginable, while Mackenzie's (at the time) grad school apartment would be described by Wills at first sight as “uhhh....quaint”. Mackenzie and Wills had noticed each other in the parking lot – but as neither was a parking lot pickup artist, they had yet to speak.

One balmy afternoon while Mackenzie was home studying, she noticed quite a commotion outside. The Wayne State radio tower, which rises high above the the Midtown skyline adjacent to the parking lot between Mackenzie and Wills' apartments, was surrounded by police cars. Peering out the window, Mackenzie saw neighbors congregating – including the particular neighbor for whom she had a keen eye. Everyone was watching the police yell at a thrill-seeker climbing near the top to come down - this was the perfect opportunity to strike up a conversation, starting with, “Wow, have you ever seen someone climb that??! I hope they don't fall!”

Because they were so high in the air, it took some time for the climb down. Meanwhile, Mackenzie and Wills chatted about everything from where they grew up, went to college, to love for certain Detroit bars (especially The Bronx). As the police arrested and hauled off the thrill-seeker, Wills romantically asked for Mackenzie's number.

Five years and countless brunches later, after a move to Ferndale, and acquiring an adorable Australian Terrier named Zara, Wills proposed to Mackenzie in the dog park across the street from their old apartments. Spoiler alert: She said YES!

We are so excited to get married at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, less than a mile down Cass from where we met “Under the Radio Tower”. Our eternal gratitude to whomever it was that decided to climb the tower that day, and to our family and friends, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for being such wonderful people! We cannot wait to celebrate with you!

Note

We hope you enjoy your time in Detroit! Some of our favorite things to do on weekends are below. Sorry for the long list. We love this city so much! Ignore the list, wander around, and you will find cool stuff!

Note

Saturday mornings at Eastern Market, a farmer’s market and shopping district operating for over 150 years

-Have brunch at Vivio’s and try their famous Bloody Mary (there is usually a wait to be seated, join the list before arrival through Yelp app or Facebook)

-Check out R. Hirt next door to Vivio’s; live out your Little House on the Prairie dreams and feel like you’ve stepped into an old time General Store

-Walk the vendor stalls under the sheds

-Visit Germack’s for old fashioned candy and other specialty items

-Grab a beer at dog-friendly Eastern Market Brewing Company (Wills, Mackenzie, and Zara celebrated here immediately after getting engaged) or head to Detroit City Distillery if you’re looking for the hard stuff

Note

Belle Isle Aquarium and Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory

-The Aquarium was designed by George D. Mason and Albert Kahn to have an underwater feeling. It is ran entirely by volunteers. The basement was a speakeasy during Prohibition. Don’t miss seeing the seahorses in the back to the right, they're our favorite!

-Mackenzie calls the Conservatory a “cheap tropical vacation” because it is warm, humid, and full of beautiful flowers year-round. Caution if you have allergies!

Note

Visit the Detroit Institute of Arts, which speaks for itself. Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Matisse can be found, along with the famous Diego Rivera mural

-Don’t miss the Kresge Court for food/drinks and great atmosphere

-Free with Oakland, Wayne, or Macomb county ID

Note

Woodward south to Campus Martius Park, which has an ice rink and heated tents with food and drinks

-Wander over to Grand Trunk Pub (where Harry Houdini once had a magic shop) for great food and Michigan Microbrews

-See beans fly through the tubes at Roasting Plant coffeehouse

-Woodward South of I-75 and North of Campus Martius is good for shopping, including H&M, Lululemon, and Warby Parker

Note

Hang Out/Shop in Midtown: there are many great boutiques, vintage stores, and places to grab a bite to eat. See *that* radio tower!

-Shinola for watches & more, City Bird, Nora, Third Man Records, Filson Leather, Detroit Clothing Circle to name a few

-Eat at The Bronx Bar (best burger in town), Motor City Brewing Works, Hopcat, or (the slightly pricy but AMAZING FOOD) at Selden Standard

-Great Lakes Coffee (and beer, wine, cocktails, food) where Mackenzie & Wills had their first date

-Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD)
