Our Big Fat Greek Wedding

You might be wondering why we picked Crete out of the 200+ gorgeous Greek islands for our wedding. But if you have had the fortune of visiting Crete before, you will know it is unlike any other island in Greece.

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is arguably, the one with the most to offer. You could spend months there without uncovering all of its gems. The island is also special to us because it happens to be the birthplace of Maria's father (Kostas, aka Don Dino) ♥

We cannot wait to share our special day with you. Expect lots of dancing (Sirtaki anyone?) drinking and hopefully even plate smashing. OPA!

Getting In

Crete has 2 international airports - Chania Airport (CHQ) and Heraklion Airport (HER). We recommend flying to HER as it is closest to the wedding venue.

Alternatively, you may also wish to fly to mainland Athens and spend a few nights exploring the city before you catch a ferry boat (link to ferry scanner below) or a flight to Heraklion.

If your accommodation doesn't offer an airport shuttle, you can hire a taxi at the airport - the taxi rank is easily spotted as you exit the airport. For those staying in Stalida, Malia and Hersonissos, the taxi ride will take 15-20 minutes and will cost €40-50.

Car

Getting Around

Getting around Crete should be fairly simple. You can get to pretty much get to anywhere on the island using taxis or public transportation. Uber does not work in Crete but there are several taxi companies which offer 24/7 taxi for hire service.

If you are staying in Crete for several days and are feeling more adventurous, we highly recommend you rent a car, or a quad bike, so you can explore the island from coast to coast.

Note

Where To Stay

The best area to stay in Crete will depend on the length of your stay, your preferred mode of transportation and how far away you'd like to be from the wedding activities.

For those of you wanting to remain close to the wedding venue, the best areas are Stalida, Malia or Hersonissos. The wedding will take place in Stalida (also referred to as Stalis) roughly 30km away from Heraklion airport. Stalida is central, convenient, and is known for its long, family friendly-beach. The region is full of attractions of all kinds. It also has every convenience, from many full-service beaches to plenty of restaurant, bars and tavernas. Malia and Hersonissos are the neighbouring towns, also vibrant and popular tourist destinations.

If you don't mind venturing out, the historical old town of Chania, located on the West coast is probably one of the most beautiful areas in Crete. It is located close to the best beaches such as Agia Marina, Stalos, and Platanias. Bear in mind, if you decide to stay in Chania, it is best if you rent a car.

Located right in the middle of the North coast, Rethymno is a good place to stay in Crete if you want a convenient location to explore both Chania and Heraklion as it is located approximately halfway between the two areas.
