Our Story

From our own perspectives -

Raman's side:
Sherene and I didn't get along at first. In fact, one of my most memorable early moments of interacting with Sherene was when she yelled at me at a SAS party because I had front door duty and she thought I was doing a terrible job (I wasn't).

I was convinced that we had no business being friends, but somehow that changed. We started hanging out after SASBoard meetings, and I quickly realized that I had serious misconceptions about her. What began as a debrief on the last board meeting (and an opportunity to express some opinions we couldn't express to the larger group) eventually turned into deep conversations about friends, family, and life.

Whether it is verbally in person or by text on GChat, Sherene has been a constant source of support in my life ever since. We've been unintentionally chasing each other around the East Coast (me following her to New York and her following me to DC), but I think it's time we put an end to that and start planning our lives together.

Sherene's side:
I first met Raman freshmen year at UPenn, and suffice to say, it did not go well. It took about three different times for Raman to remember my first name and he kept re-introducing himself to me. I was not impressed.

After we both joined SASBoard during our sophomore year, we became really good friends after realizing that we shared similar traits such as a twisted sense of humor and a fierce loyalty to our friends. Over the years, we became best friends who supported each other through all the milestones in our adult lives: moving to new cities, broken hearts and failed relationships, embarking on new careers, making new friends, everything.

After having known Raman for 12 years (!!), I can honestly say that there is no one who knows me better or who is better suited for me.

How did you first meet?

Raman and Sherene first met in 2005 at the SAS freshmen mixer Sherene organized at the local bowling alley. Raman attended and they introduced themselves to each other.

The next time they first met was a few weeks after that at Hill College House when Sherene stopped by to grab lunch with a friend who lived there. Raman introduced himself to Sherene then, too.

They next time they first met was at the SAS show try outs when Hype tried out to perform in the fall show. Raman again introduced himself to Sherene. She said nothing and judged.

Who's going to take out the trash?

Raman will, as long as Sherene does the dishes :D

How did you propose?

On Wednesday, February 15, Raman told Sherene that they should go out for a nice dinner. At the end of the day, he showed up at Sherene's work place to pick her up. He had clues ready for her that took her around the city to their favorite places.

The first stop was Churchkey on 14th St in Logan Circle. This was a place where Sherene first met Raman's siblings, and they spent a lot of time with their friends. The second stop was Mandu, a Korean restaurant in DC where they discovered one of their favorite dishes: dolsot bibim bap.

The final stop was the Sculpture Garden in DC. This place holds special meaning because Sherene has always wanted to go for their summer Jazz in the Garden events, but Raman's work schedule never allowed it! They spent some time walking around the garden and looking at the sculptures. As they were walking along a path, Sherene noticed a blanket near Robert Indiana’s AMOR installation. There is a LOVE statue by Robert Indiana on Penn's campus where Sherene and Raman first met. It was there, in front of the statue, that Raman proposed!
