Flights

We recommend flying into Avram Iancu Cluj-Napoca International Airport.
Currently, prices are very expensive on some of these airlines but all of the airlines have frequent discount promotions that we will keep an eye on and alert people of through this web page.

There are three carriers flying there at the moment:

1. Wizzair (preferred option)
You can fly into Cluj from:
- London Luton
- Birmingham
- Liverpool
- Doncaster/Sheffield
- Potentially Gatwick if the airport opens up again. Over the last 24 months flights from Gatwick have stopped.

2. Ryanair
Flies into Cluj from London Stansted

3. Blueair (Last resort option)
Flies into Cluj from London Heathrow

If you're flying from Scotland there are unfortunately no direct flights, but you could maybe look into flying through Budapest or Bucharest, both of which then have flights to Cluj (or just take a train down to London and fly from there)

Note

Accommodation

Please see below all the hotels we recommend. Sorry about the order of some of this information - this site has its limitations sometimes!
There are several accommodation options in Cluj-Napoca. We recommend you stay in the city (closer to the centre) rather than closer to the wedding venue.

Hotel Platinia, Calea Mănăștur, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Probably the nicest hotel in Cluj. It was originally designed to be apartments and when they couldn’t sell them, they made each apartment into a hotel room. So, every room is a suite.

15 mins walk to the city centre and located right next to a brand new shopping complex with restaurants and a Starbucks etc. It is most likely where Nina and I will stay and is definitely a treat!

Its 130 euros a night.

Grand Hotel Italia, Strada Trifoiului, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

The biggest hotel in Cluj in every aspect. It sits on the hill and dominates the landscape.

It is where Endava have had all their parties and is ‘Posh’ but perhaps a wee bit dated. Saying that, the rooms will be huge and is a bit of celebrity haunt during the music festival period.

You can stay here for about 100 euros a night and it is the closest to the wedding venue. However it is a taxi ride from the city centre. (10-15 mins)

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cluj - City Plaza, Strada Sindicatelor, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

On of the nicest hotels in Cluj. A higher level Hilton and therefore you pay for that.

About £100-120 a night.

Centre of cluj and easy walking to everything in the centre.

Ramada by Wyndham Cluj, Calea Turzii, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

The same as any Ramada hotel (apart from the Blue Class) and relatively central. (10 min walk to the centre and 20 mins taxi to the venue)

Its about 70 euros a night and will do you just fine for your stay.

Weather in Cluj

August is Summertime for real in Cluj. Remember to take some comfortable shoes in case you arrive earlier and want to take a walk through the city. There are a lot of places to see and the good part is that the city is not very big, so you can walk almost from one place to another.

Train

Cluj Napoca, Gara Centrală, Strada Căii Ferate, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

There is a train to Cluj that runs from Paris through Vienna and Budapest ending up in Cluj. It takes 3 days and if people wanted an... interesting… journey to Romania then it could be an option. I have never done it and i probably will never do it BUT i know some of my family would see this as an adventure.

If you want some advice on this then give me a call and we can discuss it.

Golden Tulip Ana Dome, Observatorului Street, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

This hotel is equidistant from the venue and the city centre. It’s where the football teams stay when they play CFR Cluj (local football team) which i think is always a good indication of its facilities.
Its a short (10 min) taxi, bus, 30 min walk to the centre of Cluj.

We have spoken to the hotel about rates and their indication was about 60-70 euros a night.

I have not stayed here but i know it is a good hotel and would be a perfect place for your stay.

Hampton by Hilton Cluj-Napoca, Bulevardul 21 Decembrie 1989, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

The lower end of the Hilton brand of hotels but perfectly nice and probably as close as you will get to the city centre at the price range. (Walkable in 15 mins)

Indications at the moment put it at 100 euros a night. (I would recommend other hotels before this one at this price)

Its where Endava house our clients when they come to visit and its got everything you would expect from a Hilton hotel.

Like every other hotel, it would be a taxi ride to the wedding venue of about 25 mins.

Hotel Beyfin, Strada Avram Iancu, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

This hotel is DEAD CENTRE Cluj. I am not sure you could get much closer…

Its right on the square looking over the cathedral and looks lovely. I have not stayed there but it has 4 stars.

Early indications look like its about £60-70 a night and can be cancelled.

I think my parents and siblings will most likely stay here.

Shopping in Cluj

Another shopping mall in Cluj. I think this is the better one but is smaller.

It has everything you need and more and is slightly closer to the city centre.

Note

Shopping in Cluj

This is one of the shopping malls in Cluj. It has 70+ shops, cinema, gym, food etc.

Forgot your shirt? need new socks? Go here.

Note

Currency/Money/Paying in Cluj

The Romanian currency is called Ron/Lei. Its about 5.9 lei to £1.

I would recommend getting Revolut/monzo for when you are out there.

You can pay almost everywhere with card/contactless apart from the markets. Even on the busses you use your card.

I would carry a wee bit of cash though (100/150 lei) for tips in restaurants etc. They don't do tips on card machines and the custom is 10%.

Note

Things to do in Cluj

Salina Turda Saltmine - Great place and is about 30 mins outside of cluj.
Salina Turda (Hungarian: Tordai sóbánya) is a salt mine in the Durgău-Valea Sărată area of Turda, the second largest city in Cluj County, northwest Romania. Opened for tourists in 1992, the Salina Turda mine was visited by about 618,000 Romanian and foreign tourists in 2017.
Featured in National Geographic

Central Park - contains the U-Cluj stadium as well as lovely walks through many trees. (This is why i dont write tourist guides)

Churches - lovely Gothic Architecture Catholic Church which you can climb the bell tower and a huge Orthodox Christian Cathedral in the centre.

Old City walls - this is really what is says on the tin - Old. Walls. In the City. They are famous of repelling some bad people years ago.

Botanical Gardens - This is well worth a visit for those who like plants and flowers and trees.

Q & A

For all our friends and family who have lots of questions, please check out our Q & A first!

Whom should I call with questions?

Please feel free to call either one of us:

Nina: +447308224187 (UK), +40742679410 (RO)
Jay: +447765220459

Can I bring a date?

Yes - please make sure to add your guest when your RSVP.

How do I get around the city?

There are buses that go all around Cluj - you can buy a ticket on the bus (there's contactless payment inside the buses) or at a bus stop where there are ticket machines.

If you want to take a taxi we suggest using the Bolt or Uber app. You can of course take a normal taxi as well (you'll see them all around town) but they might struggle with English.

How will food and drinks be served?

There will be a sit down meal with 4 courses served throughout the afternoon and evening. We will also have a fruit and candy bar available all day.
There will be white and red wine on every table, along with soft drinks, but there will also be an open bar with beers, cocktails and spirits.

What if I have a dietary restriction?

Closer to the time you will get an RSVP that will ask for more information on dietary requirements.
