Story

It was fall 2012, and Kevin had declared that he was off the dating market, having moved to San Francisco and had little luck finding a leading lady. Kevin’s friend, Tim, took this as a challenge and schemed with Adam, their manager, to find someone suitable.

Sidnie worked with Adam's wife Valley, and when Adam described Kevin’s sardonic-and-sometimes-inappropriate-wit, Valley immediately thought of Sidnie as a possible match.

Valley and Adam decided that they would play Cupid and invite both Sidnie and Kevin to their son, Cormac’s, first birthday party. When Valley invited Kevin to Cormac's party he was skeptical at first but after talking to Adam (The conversation went something like "Uh a one-year-old's birthday party?") he was assured that in fact there would be both beer and Mexican food, as well as a cute girl his wife worked with. Sidnie had been set up many times, to no avail, and had pretty low expectations, telling her friend “what kind of guy comes to a one-year-old’s birthday party?”. Still, she decided to give it a shot, especially after seeing Kevin’s photo and deciding he looked pretty cute, if not a little smug.

When Valley messaged Kevin to invite him (little did he know Sidnie was sitting right next to her) he replied that he would love to attend and would "be there will bells on". Valley thought the bells may be a bit much but Kevin was resolute "No dice, bells or nothing!" (He made a game time decision to leave the bells at home but still wear clothes).

Once he arrived they were introduced with the the not-so-subtle prompting of "Hey that’s Sidnie, go say hi" while the other friends retreated to observe from a safe distance and narrated the play-by-play from afar. Kevin and Sidnie awkwardly stood next to each other at the taco line, before being pushed into conversation by Tim. (The first and last time either person had been speechless).

Kevin and Sidnie began chatting for a while, and before they realized it, Sidnie had to leave for another outing, and Kevin missed her hint of “I have to go but my car is like a mile away....". Kevin, ever oblivious, countered with “Wow that’s far...have a good one!”.

The next day Kevin connected with Sidnie via work chat and proposed a lunch date on the Google campus. They quickly progressed from there to a first “real” date, on Halloween. They’d like to say they enjoyed a nice meal, but that would be a stretch, as Kevin forgot Sidnie had mentioned a revulsion of ham and happily ordered a Jambon Iberico appetizer. Sidnie tried to stomach a big bite to prove herself an adventurous eater and good sport (she is actually neither) but was secretly disgusted. The two headed to a comedy show next, where Kevin insisted they sit in the front row where they were heckled ruthlessly, Sidnie had one-too-many drinks, which resulted in her loudly blurting out the punchline of the headlining act before the comedian. (The comedian was not happy.) Still, they found the evening to be hilarious and fun, sharing their first kiss in a slight rain under a streetlight on the steps of the Powell St BART station as Sidnie departed. The rest is history!

Tidbits

What's the best meal you have eaten together?

We've actually had really bad luck with fancier restaurants - we found a hair in our food at the French Laundry, and Sidnie got food poisoning after the Inn at Meadowood. Our best meal was at State Bird Provisions. We waited to get reservations for quite a while soon after it opened, and Kevin surprised Sidnie when they finally came through - the restaurant is understated and has no signage out front, so Sidnie didn't even know where we were eating until she sat down and was handed a menu. The meal was great - Californian fare served dim sum-style! Overall, Kevin is a great chef and we have friends who have excellent taste in restaurants, so we eat well quite often.

What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?

Mendocino is a locale we keep coming back to as a special place - which is why we're excited to share it with you and to have it as a memorable rendezvous destination we can escape to for years to come. Other than that, we took a trip to Europe together in 2014, visiting four countries in five weeks. Switzerland and the Alps were lovely and have a special place in our hearts, we had a blast meeting up with Sidnie's brother and sister-in-law in Italy, and went on the longest walking tour in Prague, but our favorite place was Provence and the south of France, where we headed after touring Paris. We stayed in a 16th-century bell tower and drank lots of rose while soaking up some sun.

What nicknames do you have for each other?

We save most of our nicknames for Pearl, who goes by "the baby", Beaster, Babs, Bab-u, Pearlita Pickles, and sometimes less-endearing names when she is misbehaving.

How did you first meet?

Our friend, Valley, introduced us - check out "Our Story" for more details :)

Who's going to take out the trash?

Whoever notices the trash is full - we're modern that way :)

What was your most memorable date?

S: Kevin surprised me on a weeknight one September with an early birthday present - Lumineers tickets! The Golden Gate Yacht Club had just won the America's Cup that day, and the venue was right down by the water, with the city was all lit up and excited in the background. The concert was awesome, and at one point, the band came out in the audience and did a few songs right next to us - we felt like the concert was just for us. It was a really warm, lovely evening, and I thought it was special that Kevin treated me to a night out with one of my favorite bands.

K: The first date that Sidnie planned was a ferry ride to nearby Tiburon Island. Sidnie did not warn me that it we'd take ferry, so I was really cold the entire ride, but it was worth it. Highlights include a seafood lunch, long walk, and watching the sunset over the water. Ask us about the 4-year old girl (with the voice of a 50-year-old smoker) who interrupted us kissing to ask for help getting down from a nearby rock. (We helped her.)

What's your favorite activity together?

We like to cook together whether just the two of us on a weeknight, or for bigger groups. Probably our favorite thing is to entertain and throw parties. We feel like we have the most wonderful friends and family, so getting people together - whether for a random last-minute crab feed, or a well-planned New Year's party for 40 - our time is best spent when it's shared with those we love. On a typical evening, we like to walk our dog, Pearl, around the neighborhood and listen to podcasts together - our favorites are This American Life and My Favorite Murder.

Where are you going for your honeymoon?

We love traveling in urban places and sightseeing, but also know we will need to relax after the wedding, so we're planning a trip split between Amsterdam for the touring, museums, and restaurants, and nightlife, and then the Maldives from a much slower pace, spent in a hut above the water, eating lots of seafood and diving with whale sharks.

When did you first think you might marry the other person?

K: Soon after meeting Sidnie, I was traveling around the world for about five weeks and realized I really missed her. When she was there to pick me up at the airport, I was so happy to see her and I knew she was the one.
S: We'd been dating a few weeks and Kevin invited me to Thanksgiving, which he was hosting for some close friends. I already really liked him, but spending the day getting the meal ready, seeing what a good cook he was and how generous he was with his friends made me really fall for him. I texted my cousin that I hoped he'd be "the one" and I wished on the wishbone that we'd get married :)

How did Kevin propose?

Kevin was on a trip in Australia and called Sidnie's parents to tell them he wanted to propose. He then schemed with Sidnie's cousin, Michael, to get the perfect ring. The one hiccup was that the ring wasn't ready until two days before, so Kevin was really sweating his planned proposal. Sidnie hoped he would propose, and as she opened a small jewelry box in the bottom of her stocking, she was glad she got a manicure -until she realized it was earrings. Convinced he was not proposing, they headed to Sidnie's parents' house where Kevin handed her a much larger box, wrapped in custom paper featuring pictures of them. Sidnie was so excited when she found the smaller box and beautiful emerald ring within, as were her parents. Sidnie's best friends from childhood arrived a few minutes later to celebrate by toasting with champagne served in the glasses her parent's used at their wedding.

SFO

We recommend flying into SFO. From there, the drive to Mendocino is about 175 miles.

Note

Drive to Mendocino

The drive to Mendocino from the Bay Area will take you about 3-4 hours depending on where you start. You can take the 101 to the 128, or the Pacific Coast Highway (which will take a little longer!) The last hour of the drive can be winding (but beautiful), so be prepared if you get carsick.

Note

Lodging Note

We will not be securing a block of hotel rooms since few establishments in Mendocino offer the ability to do so. We urge you instead to book a room or house as early as possible. Other than hotels and bed-and-breakfasts, consider renting a home or room through VRBO or Air BnB. You can also broaden you search to nearby Fort Bragg, though we urge you to stay in Mendocino if you plan on drinking, as that will be where the shuttles meet for pickup and drop off. Please call Sidnie or Kevin if you have any trouble with lodging or travel.

Shuttle

Complimentary Shuttle - TBA

Calendar

May 20

Clock

3:00 PM - 3:30 PM

A shuttle will be running to pick up guests in a centralized location in Mendocino and take them to the ceremony site, then to the reception site, and back to Mendocino at the end of the evening.

Q & A

For all our friends and family who have lots of questions, please check out our FAQ first!

Are kids welcome?

All of our friends and family currently raising tiny people will be invited (and again, you'll notice their names on your invitation) - we love kids and think they can really cut a rug on the dance floor and add a lot to the event. We will make sure they have something to eat and that there is space for them to do their thing. If there are enough RSVPs from tiny people, we will reach out to parents closer to the wedding date to discuss providing a caregiver so you can party late into the evening after the little guys have gotten sleepy. With that said, if parents with kiddos would rather make the occasion of our wedding weekend into a romantic getaway for two, please don't feel pressure to bring children. We don't know, but it looks like a lot of work :)

What time should I arrive?

The ceremony will take place at 4 PM on Saturday, May 20th. We will be inviting everyone to a welcome bonfire on Friday evening at 7 PM and and an Au Revoir Brunch on Sunday before we depart. You can come to all three of the events, or just the ceremony and our invitation will allow you the ability to RSVP for the events you would like to attend.

Where should I park?

There is parking at the ceremony space, and at the reception destination. A shuttle will make four stops to pick folks up to get to the ceremony, and that same shuttle will get people to the cocktail hour. Shuttles will start running back to the town of Mendocino and hotels at 8:30 PM - 10:00 PM. However, the shuttle can only accommodate 20 people at a time, so we'd recommend driving, if you can. If you imbibe too much at the reception, you are welcome o leave your car overnight and come back to get it before noon the next day (Sunday).

Are the ceremony and reception locations wheelchair accessible?

Yes, but with some difficulty, so please talk with Sidnie and Kevin upon receiving your Save the Date or invitation if you'll need any special accommodations. We want you to be comfortable and happy as you witness our vows (well, you may be a little uncomfortable with the kissing, but aside from that!)

What should I wear?

Mendocino is notoriously chilly and overcast. The weather can be unpredictable, so please bring a light rain coat for the weekend and layers to wear. Our wedding will be semiformal, "California chic", and the ceremony and cocktail hour will take place outside, so please bring a jacket, cardigan, or wrap. All other events during the weekend will be casual. Above all, we want you to be comfortable, so wear what makes you happy, and makes you want to DANCE! We already think you look great. :) Ladies will most likely want to refrain from heels as the ground will be a bit unstable.

What kind of shoes should/shouldn't I wear?

We think you'll agree that our ceremony space is magical albeit with some magical dust. It is only accessed by a small path, so we'd advise against tall heels and steer ladies toward wearing flats, wedges, or a kitten heel. Your shoes will probably get a tad dirty, but we promise it will be worth it.

Whom should I call with questions?

Starting on Friday, you should call the maid-of-honor, Stephanie, or the best man, Aaron.

Is there a gifts registry?

Ah, that's so sweet, thank you for asking! We have a registry and Honeymoon fund through Zola that you can find at:

Is it okay to take pictures with our phones and cameras during the wedding?

Within reason; we will have a professional photographer, so feel free to just enjoy the ceremony and let Lucille get the expert shots. If you just have to have one (we are pretty good looking!) then please feel free, make sure it is extra flattering, and don't forget to use the hashtag #stadnie. When we look out in the crowd, we'd rather see your beautiful face than cell phones, though, so no paparazzi :)
