Story
Tony and Clare met in Seattle three and half years ago. She was practically a native, having just moved back to Seattle after a two year stint in Denver. Tony was settling in to Seattle, where he too had relocated from Denver looking for something new.
As fate, technology, and the Broncos would have it, the two met via a dating app following a less than favorable Broncos superbowl, and quickly bonded over mutual frustrations over Seahawks fans. They met one happy hour to watch the Colorado Avs play the Wild in playoffs. Tony was struck by Clare's ability to keep up with sports (and Colorado) knowledge, and Clare found a genuine interest in this Colorado boy's ambition and wit.
Dexter, Clare's two year old lab mix wasted no time letting Tony into the wolf pack. After just a few months, Tony, Clare and Dexter were spending weekends exploring hiking trails in Washington, going for a swim and paddleboard at the local dog beach, or across the board to Revelstoke for a ski weekend.
A little over a year into dating, Tony and Clare talked their way into a silent action hosted by the Sounders to benefit Seattle Humane. The duo left with a basket of toys for Dexter, and a free adoption from Seattle Humane, where they found and fell in love with Tucker, a fluffy 8 week old German Shepherd. Raising a puppy was a challenge Clare and Tony faced head on, and ultimately decided would be easier to handle living in the same place. Tony and Tucker "officially" moved in with Clare and Dexter in the summer of 2015.
In the summer of 2016, Clare and Tony decided to pack up and move to the bay. On Christmas Eve, they drove with the dogs (and their Christmas tree) down the coast to celebrate their first Californian Christmas. Clare only subtly hinted that Tony should put a ring on it, but had no idea that Tony was working his magic behind the scenes --see our tidbits!
On February 13th, on a beach at sunset in Cancun, Tony told Clare how happy she made him and how much he wanted to spend the rest of his live with her. Without hesitation, Clare said yes!
Tidbits
How did you first meet?
Tinder! The Broncos had lost the super bowl to the Seahawks, and both of us were in dire need of a sports ally (and a date!). We watched the Avs play the Wild in the playoffs, and quickly found out we had more in common than just a few sports teams.
Who's going to take out the trash?
Dexter! For reasons unknown, one of Dexter's favorite activities is running down the hallway to the trash room and sprinting back to the apartment. So we take turns making his day!
Who made the first move? How?
Clare did. Tony's profile was pictures of him at Red Rocks, playing hockey in a Buffs jersey, and hiking.
What was your most memorable date?
Clare: The weekend Tony flew down to SF while I was living here for Y Combinator. We rented a car, drove down to Santa Clara one day (and found Alice's Restaurant along the way!) then drove to Napa the next day to do a wine tasting at our favorite winery, Peju, and explored San Francisco downtown!
Tony: It was one of the first dates we went on. Clare took me to my first Sounders game, and following a Sounders win, we went to Edgewater for some wine with a sunset over the water.
What's your favorite activity together?
Clare: Taking the dogs to the beach, trying a new sushi spot, or winery, or brewery. Getting outdoors or walking around the city.
Tony: Sounders and Broncos games in every city we live in (and a few away games!)
How did you propose:
When I decided I wanted to pop the question and spend the rest of my life with this lovely girl, I figured the trip we were taking to Mexico for my sister's wedding would be the perfect romantic setting for it. Clare had mentioned a family heirloom, so I talked to Katie and then contacted Clare's dad Scott who I had not yet met.
After a good talk with Scott, we made arrangements to get her grandma's diamond to me to start the custom ring design. I brought a placeholder ring to Mexico and talked to the resort to set up a lovely picnic on the beach on our last night there.
With some wine and cheese and a colorful sunset, I asked her if she would marry me and she said yes! Then we went back to our room where rose petals, chocolate strawberries and champagne were waiting for us to top off a perfect trip.
Who is the better cook?
Clare, hands down. Except when it comes to fish tacos, then Tony is master of the kitchen!
