Story
Before we ever met, we each found ourselves working in the game development industry in Los Angeles. Then, still without knowing each other, we each left California in search of better opportunities in Austin, Texas. We set up dating profiles on OKCupid.
Abby was on the verge of giving up on online dating after multiple wastes-of-time. But when she saw that the algorithm put Adam at a 98% match with her, she got curious and decided to take a chance. 98% is unusually high!
Adam had given up on online dating when he got that message from Abby, out of the blue. He didn't expect that.
Our first date was at a gluten-free restaurant, PF Chang's in North Austin. We bonded over a shared love of the Wheel of Time books, but we were hesitant about each other. After all, we had experienced failed relationships, and we had each learned to be very independent and self-reliant.
On our third date, at a friend's party, our casual conversation revealed that we had both worked with the exact same people in Los Angeles, on "God Of War" for mobile, the biggest mobile game prior to the arrival of the iPhone.
What were the chances? Infinitesimal! Los Angeles county contains 27 million people, and there are thousands of games being developed there at any given time. That game had fewer than 50 people working on it. Yet our paths had nearly crossed multiple times while we were in our twenties, oblivious. Abby was on the art team at WayForward while Adam was on the dev team at Javaground.
We dated some more. We went on hikes, we moved near each other, we fell in love. We got serious. We got engaged. We had an engagement party at Abby's parents' home in New Hampshire. We rented a house together in north Austin.
You all know that it wasn't smooth sailing from there. We split up. We got back together a year or two later. We split up again. We got back together again. We split up again. Then, just as Abby had totally given up on the whole thing, Adam busted back into her life with renewed confidence and vigor.
What you may not know is that we always kept in touch. Even during our split ups, we called each other just about every week. We've always been excellent at communicating with each other. We're really good at making each other laugh. Go figure; we work with words and syntax.
The first time Adam proposed to Abby, he surprised her with an heirloom ring from his great-grandmother, atop a mountain in Colorado.
The second time Adam proposed to Abby, he surprised her atop Enchanted Rock in Texas. There were hikers on the big granite dome. They saw us and clapped!
We can't imagine a lifelong future with anyone else. We look forward to sharing our lives together!
