Our Tomyam Tale
It all started back in university, where Kimberly and I were basically “hi-bye” friends. We weren’t exactly star-crossed lovers at first glance, unless you count exchanging awkward smiles across crowded hallways as romance.
One day, Kimberly popped up on my Instagram feed, because she posted a story about visiting Penang. I replied to her story, “Should we out for dinner? Or I’ll eat cereal and cry.” To my shock, and slight panic, she said yes. Just like that, we went from “hi-bye” acquaintances to actual plans. Plot twist!
Our first date happened at a quirky little Tomyam stall that could only be described as unconventional. It was set up in an open space right in front of a car workshop in Raja Uda. It wasn’t fancy, it had plastic chairs, wobbly tables, and zero air conditioning, but she swear it is the best Tomyam in town (I denied that).
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Kimberly dove into her bowl like a champ. Meanwhile, I took one bite of mine and immediately regretted every life decision that led me to this moment. I couldn’t even finish half of it without dramatically fanning my mouth. She laughed so hard, almost fell off her chair. But instead of judging me, she teased me in the most endearing way possible.
Oh, and here’s the kicker: She asked for my number. No games, no waiting-for-the-guy-to-make-the-first-move nonsense. Nope. She hit me with a confident, “What's your phone number?” Bold move, Kimberly. Bold move.
From that point on, everything clicked. What started as a random outing turned into endless conversations, inside jokes, and adventures that made me realize: this woman is adorable, sweet and charming. Sure, she may have scarred me for life with that Tomyam experience, but hey, love isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s messy, sweaty, and full of tears—mostly from spicy food.
Kimberly, thank you for saying yes—to that ridiculous first date, to putting up with my inability to handle spice, and most importantly, to spending the rest of your life with me. You’re my partner in crime, and the only person I’ll willingly share dessert with (sometimes).
