The number of cards you order is easy to get wrong in both directions. Too few and you're scrambling for a reprint at the worst possible time. Too many and you've spent money you didn't need to. A little planning now gets you to the right number without the stress of figuring it out later.
Count Households, Not Guests
Cards go to households, not individuals. If two guests share an address, they get one card between them. Start by counting how many households you're inviting.
Plan for the Unexpected
Mail goes to old addresses. Envelopes get damaged. Someone on your list moves between now and send date. Add 5 to 10 cards to your order as a buffer. It sounds like a small thing until you need one and don't have it.
Keep a Few for Yourself
After everything settles, you'll want something to hold onto. A few cards tucked away for a memory box, a parent, or a scrapbook is worth planning for. Add another 5 to 10 to your total.
Your Formula
Number of households | your baseline |
+ Buffer for mishaps | + 5 to 10 cards |
+ Cards to keep | + 5 to 10 cards |
Total to order | baseline + 10 to 20 |
Note: Print orders have minimums, and reorders cost more per card than your original order. If you're on the fence between two numbers, go with the higher one.
