Denver Zoo became the first zoo in the United States to use naturalistic zoo enclosures rather than cages or bars. It expanded on this concept in 1996 with Primate Panorama, in 2004 with Predator Ridge and Toyota Elephant Passage in 2012. Denver Zoo continues its innovative exhibit designs with the recent opening of The Edge, bringing visitors close enough to a tiger that they can hear their characteristic chuff as they move between habitats.
