6 Delicious Tips for Deciding on a Wedding Cake

A tall, multi-layered cake with a topper representing the happy couple—it’s one of those iconic images that springs to people’s minds when they think of weddings. If you set out looking for a wedding cake without knowing much about them beforehand, however, the prices you find may seem shockingly high. If you really want one, it can totally be worth it. But a wedding cake is not a wedding necessity. There are plenty of other options for providing your guests with dessert. If you’re still trying to decide whether or not a wedding cake is for you, check out these six wedding dessert tips!

1. Realize that wedding cakes take a lot of time and skill to make.

The price that you pay will reflect the time and effort that goes into making the cake. You should shop around to see if you can get a good deal, but realize that it may still cost quite a bit more than you originally thought.

2. Know that simple designs are cheaper.

You don’t have to go with an intricately decorated cake with mango filling. A simple design can be just as delicious and save you a lot of money.

3. Schedule a tasting.

If you’re paying for a cake, you should be able to eat it. If you’re going to spend the money on a big wedding cake, make sure to talk with the baker about scheduling a tasting. You should vet a baker just like you would other vendors. If the baker doesn’t offer a tasting, that may be a sign to look elsewhere.

4. Book well ahead of time.

Since wedding cakes take a lot of work to make, you shouldn’t try to order one at the last minute. If you find a baker that you like and trust, you should book earlier rather than later. You can work with the baker on the details of your cake in the months leading up to the wedding.

5. Ask your caterer or venue coordinator if there is a slicing fee

If you’re getting your cake from an outside bakery, your venue or catering service may charge you a “slicing fee” to have their staff cut and serve the cake. This is something you may not be able to avoid, but it’s always good to know ahead of time!

6. Consider wedding cake alternatives.

A traditional wedding cake is not the be-all and end-all of wedding desserts. You can find perfectly delicious cakes at supermarkets. And you don’t have to limit your dessert options, either. You can have all kinds of delicious desserts instead of or in addition to a cake!
