What Is a Honeymoon Registry?
A honeymoon registry lets couples ask wedding guests to contribute money toward their honeymoon instead of (or alongside) traditional household gifts. Rather than registering for a toaster or a set of towels, couples create funds for flights, hotel stays, excursions, spa treatments, and other travel experiences they actually want.
The idea is straightforward: guests give toward something meaningful, and couples start married life with an unforgettable trip instead of duplicates of things they already own.
Honeymoon Fund vs. Cash Fund vs. Traditional Registry
These terms overlap, so it helps to clarify what each one means:
Honeymoon fund. A cash fund earmarked for travel. Guests contribute to a specific trip or experience, such as “Beach Resort Stay” or “Paris Dinner Cruise.” The couple decides how specific or broad each fund is.
Cash fund. A broader category. Any fund that collects monetary contributions, whether for a honeymoon, a house down payment, a date night fund, or anything else the couple chooses. A honeymoon fund is a type of cash fund.
Traditional registry. A curated list of physical gifts from retail partners. Guests pick an item, purchase it, and it ships to the couple.
Most modern couples use a combination. A wedding registry that includes physical gifts, honeymoon funds, and other cash funds gives guests flexibility to contribute in the way that feels right to them, at whatever price point they are comfortable with.
Why combine them? Pairing a honeymoon fund with a standard gift registry means guests who prefer to pick out a tangible present can still do so, while those who would rather contribute to an experience have that option. One registry, every kind of gift.
How a Honeymoon Registry Works
Setting up a honeymoon fund takes a few minutes. From the Gifts tab on the Registry page, select “Add Gift,” then choose “Add Cash Fund.” That is the starting point for any cash-based fund, honeymoon or otherwise.
From there, name your fund, add an image, write a short note explaining what the fund is for, and set a goal amount. You can create as many individual funds as you need. Some couples set up a single “Honeymoon Fund” with a lump goal. Others break it into specific items: “Flights to Bali,” “Overwater Bungalow,” “Sunset Sailing Tour.”
Every fund you create appears alongside physical gifts in your all-in-one registry, so guests see everything in one place. No separate honeymoon registry site, no extra logins.

Payment Options
When you create a cash fund, you choose how guests can pay. The options include:
Credit or debit card. Guests pay directly on your registry page. Payments are processed securely through Stripe and collected in your Joy Wallet, which you can transfer to your bank account or debit card whenever you are ready. Learn more about credit card contributions.
Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App. Link your account username, and guests are directed to the platform to complete their payment. No fees from Joy on these transactions.
Cash or check. Guests receive your mailing address and can send their gift directly.
You can enable multiple payment methods on a single fund. For example, offer both credit card and Venmo so guests can choose whatever is most convenient for them.
Zero fees on cash gifts. Contributions made through Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App carry no fees from Joy. For credit card contributions, standard processing fees (charged by Stripe) apply, but Joy does not take a cut. For couples who want to avoid all fees, linking Venmo or PayPal is the way to go.
What You Can Add to a Honeymoon Fund
A honeymoon fund is as flexible as the trip you are planning. There are no restrictions on what your funds represent, so you can tailor them to match your actual itinerary or keep them general.
Popular Honeymoon Fund Ideas
Flights and transportation. “Round-Trip Flights to Italy,” “Airport Transfers,” “Train Passes.”
Accommodations. “Overwater Bungalow in Bora Bora,” “Boutique Hotel in Lisbon,” “Airbnb in Tokyo.”
Dining and food experiences. “Romantic Dinner for Two,” “Cooking Class in Tuscany,” “Street Food Tour.”
Activities and excursions. “Snorkeling Trip,” “Guided Hike,” “Sunset Sail,” “Spa Day.”
General travel. “Honeymoon Fund,” one open fund that covers anything.
Beyond honeymoon-specific items, you can register for experiences through the registry shop, which includes curated travel and lifestyle experiences alongside traditional gifts. Adventure, romance, culinary, relaxation: browse by category to find experiences that match your trip.
Mixing Cash Funds with Physical Gifts
Your registry does not have to be all-or-nothing. Add honeymoon funds alongside physical gifts, charity donations, and other cash funds (house fund, date night fund, pet fund) in the same registry. Guests see one unified list, organized however you prefer.
Customize Your Cash Funds
Each cash fund is fully customizable. Change the name, swap the image, update the description, and adjust the goal at any time, even after guests have started contributing.
Setting a Goal
You have two options for how guests contribute to a fund:
Fixed amounts. Set a specific gift increment (for example, $50). Guests contribute in multiples of that increment: $50, $100, $150, and so on. This works well for funds with a clear target. If your goal is $1,000 and the increment is $50, set the quantity to 20.
Any amount. Guests enter whatever dollar amount they choose. This offers maximum flexibility and works well for open-ended funds like a general honeymoon contribution.
You can also set a total goal amount and choose whether to display it publicly or keep it hidden. A visible goal shows guests how close the fund is to completion, which can encourage contributions. A hidden goal lets you track progress privately without the pressure of a public countdown.
For more detail on structuring goals, see cash fund goal options.
Personalizing Fund Details
Write a short note for each fund explaining what it is and why it matters to you. “We have been dreaming about the Amalfi Coast since our first date” is more compelling than “Honeymoon Fund.” A good description gives guests the feeling that they are contributing to a specific moment, not just handing over cash.
Add a photo that represents the fund. An image of the destination, the resort, or the experience makes the registry page more inviting and helps guests connect with where their money is going.
How Guests Contribute
Guests do not need a Joy account to contribute. They visit the couple's wedding website, open the registry, and select a fund. From there, the process depends on the payment method:
Choose an amount. Guests select from the fixed increments or enter a custom amount, depending on how the fund is set up.
Add their details. They enter their name and email so the contribution is attributed to them.
Select a payment method. Options include credit/debit card, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or cash/check, depending on what the couple has enabled.
Complete the payment. For credit card, the transaction happens directly on the page. For Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App, guests are directed to the platform to finalize payment. For cash or check, they receive the couple's mailing address.
After contributing, guests can optionally send a personalized digital card along with their gift.
The full guest experience is covered in how to contribute to a honeymoon or cash fund.
Share your registry link early. Include your wedding website URL on save-the-dates and invitations so guests can browse your registry, including honeymoon funds, well before the wedding day.
Managing Your Funds
Once contributions start coming in, the Track tab on your Registry page becomes your dashboard. Here is what you can manage from there:
Tracking Contributions
Every contribution is logged with the guest's name, the amount, and the payment method. Credit card payments appear in your Joy Wallet balance. Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App contributions go directly to your account on those platforms and are recorded on Joy for reference, though the platform itself is the source of truth for whether payment was received.
Transferring Funds
For credit card contributions, funds accumulate in your Joy Wallet. When you are ready, transfer them to your bank or debit card from the Track tab. Transfers typically arrive within three to five business days. Transfer fees are minimal and go entirely to Stripe. Joy does not keep any portion.
For example, a $500 transfer results in approximately $498.30 deposited to your account, with $1.70 going to Stripe for the bank transfer. Joy receives nothing.
Editing Funds After Launch
Need to adjust a fund after it is live? Click on any fund from your Registry page to edit the name, image, description, goal amount, or payment methods. Changes take effect immediately. If your honeymoon plans change, like upgrading from a resort to a villa, update the fund to reflect the new goal.
Multiple Funds, Multiple Payment Platforms
You can link different payment platforms to different funds. For example, connect your Venmo account to one fund and PayPal to another to keep contributions organized across accounts. This is useful if you want to track honeymoon money separately from other cash gifts. For more on this approach, see linking different accounts to different funds.
Cash Funds via Messaging
Beyond the registry page, you can also request contributions through Joy Messages. Create a cash fund, attach it to a message, and send it directly to selected guests. Guests receive an email with a secure payment link. This works well for collecting funds for group accommodations, travel expenses, or any contribution outside the standard registry flow.
