What’s a Cash Fund Registry?
A cash fund registry lets wedding guests contribute towards things the couple truly needs or wants, instead of choosing from a list of physical gifts. The couple sets up different funds—like for their honeymoon, a new home, or date nights—and guests can decide how much to give to whichever fund they feel most connected to.
Think of it as the modern version of the traditional registry. Instead of asking for a set of dishes, couples might set up a fund for their first home renovation, a cooking class they've been eyeing, or simply a 'Future Adventures' fund with no strings attached.
Cash funds don’t replace the usual registries—they just add on. When your registry has both physical gifts and cash funds, your guests can choose what suits them best. Some like picking out a present you can unwrap, others prefer chipping in for an experience or big moment. One registry, all sorts of gifts.
Why Couples Choose Cash Fund Registries
Cash gifts are becoming more common in the U.S. as couples get married later, live together before the wedding, and already have the household essentials that traditional registries used to provide. A cash fund is how modern couples ask for what they truly need.
Flexibility. Cash can go towards anything—be it a down payment, a dream holiday, or paying off student loans. Couples decide how to use the money, not a retail catalogue.
Less hassle with duplicates and returns. No more ending up with three blenders. Guests chip in to a fund, and couples can use the money where it matters most.
Fits any budget. If $200 for a registry gift feels too much, guests can easily give $50 to a cash fund instead. No minimum needed—every bit helps.
Experiences matter more than things. These days, many couples prefer travelling, good food, and making memories together instead of collecting more things. Cash funds let your guests chip in for moments that mean more than any household item.
Pair cash funds with a traditional registry. Not every guest is comfortable giving money. Including a mix of physical gifts and cash funds lets everyone contribute in the way they prefer. An all-in-one registry keeps everything organised in one place.
Types of Cash Funds You Can Set Up
There are no strict rules about what a cash fund can be for. Couples can create as many funds as they like, each with its own name, image, description, and target amount. Here are the most popular categories:
Honeymoon & Travel
This is the most common option. Couples can set up a single “Honeymoon Fund” or break it down into specific items like flights, hotel stays, activities, spa sessions, or airport transfers. Guests feel like they’re contributing to a special part of the trip, not just giving cash. For more details, see the honeymoon registry guide.
Home & Living
Funds for a house down payment, home reno, furniture, moving expenses, or even a backyard garden project. Great for couples who already live together and don’t need the usual household gifts.
Experiences & Date Nights
Cooking classes, concert tickets, weekend trips, wine tasting tours, or a date night fund for your first year together. These let guests help create new memories for the couple.
Practical & Financial
Student loan fund, emergency savings, new car fund — not the most romantic, but couples who ask for what they really need tend to receive more generous contributions than those who fill their registry with things they don’t actually want.
Charity & Giving Back
Couples can also create funds for a charitable cause, inviting guests to donate in their name. This works well with other types of funds, especially if you already have what you need.
How to Set Up a Cash Fund
Setting up a cash fund only takes a few minutes. On the Registry page, go to the Gifts tab, click “Add Gift”, then choose “Add Cash Fund”. After that:
Give your fund a name. Pick something descriptive so guests know exactly what they’re chipping in for. “Bali Overwater Bungalow” sounds way more exciting than “Cash Fund #3”.
Add a photo. Whether it’s the destination, the experience, or your goal, a picture makes your fund feel more personal and helps guests see where their contribution is going.
Add a note. Share a short description about what the fund is for and why it’s important. For example, “We’ve been dreaming of the Italian coast since our first date” helps guests understand and makes their gift more meaningful.
Set your goal. Pick a total amount and choose if you want guests to see the progress or keep it private.
Choose payment methods. Select which platforms guests can use to contribute.
Feel free to add as many cash funds as you want. They’ll show up together with your physical gifts and other registry items, so your guests can see everything at a glance.

Customise Goals & Payment Options
Each cash fund is set up on its own, so you can customise the goal structure and choose different payment options for every fund you create.
Goal Structures
You’ve got two ways for guests to contribute to each fund:
Fixed amounts. Set a specific gift amount (like $50). Guests can chip in using multiples of that amount. For example, if your goal is $1,000 and each increment is $50, just set the quantity to 20. This is great if you want straightforward, predictable contributions.
Any amount. Guests can enter any dollar amount they like. Very flexible—ideal for open-ended funds where every contribution matters, no matter the size.
You can choose to display your goals publicly (so guests can see how close the fund is to its target) or keep them hidden for your own tracking. A visible goal can encourage guests to contribute, especially when the fund is nearly complete. For more details, see our cash fund goal options.
Payment Methods
Every fund lets you offer multiple payment methods, and you can turn on as many as you like:
Credit or debit card. Guests can pay straight from the registry page. Payments are securely handled by Stripe and go into your Joy Wallet, so you can transfer to your bank account or debit card anytime you like. Usual Stripe processing fees apply. Find out more about credit card fees.
Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App. Just link your account username and guests will be sent straight to the platform to make their contribution. Joy doesn’t charge any fees for these gifts.
Cash or cheque. Guests will get your mailing address and can send their gift straight to you.
You can also link different payment platforms to different funds. For example, connect Venmo to your honeymoon fund and PayPal to your house fund to keep contributions organised. Learn more here: linking different accounts to different funds.
No fees for cash gifts. Contributions via Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App are free of charge. For credit card payments, all processing fees go straight to Stripe—Joy doesn’t take any cut.
How Guests Can Contribute
Guests don’t need a Joy account to contribute. Just head to the couple’s wedding website, open the registry, and pick the fund you’d like to support. It’s a simple process:
Pick an amount. You can choose from preset options or key in your own amount, depending on how the fund is set up.
Enter their details—name and email—so the contribution is attributed to the right person.
Choose how you want to pay—credit card, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or cash/cheque—depending on what the couple allows.
Settle the payment. Credit card payments are made on this page. For Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App, guests will be directed to the payment platform to complete the transaction. For cash or cheque, they'll receive the mailing address.
After contributing, guests can also choose to send a personalised card along with their gift.

Get Cash Equivalent
There’s also an option for couples who want to list specific products but prefer to receive cash instead. With Get Cash Equivalent, you add physical items to your registry as usual. When a guest buys one, the cash value is deposited into your Joy Wallet instead of the item being shipped. Guests see a normal registry purchase, while you enjoy the flexibility of cash. This is available for U.S. registries, for both manually added items and those added via the browser extension. Learn how Get Cash Equivalent works.
Handling Contributions & Transfers
When contributions start rolling in, your Registry page’s Track tab turns into your main dashboard. Here’s what you can manage there:
Tracking Incoming Contributions
All contributions are tracked under the Track tab on your Registry page—showing the guest’s name, amount, payment method, and which fund it went to. Credit card contributions will show up in your Joy Wallet balance. For Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App, the contributions go straight to your account on those platforms and are logged for your reference.
Transferring to Your Bank Account
If you receive contributions by credit card, the funds will be stored in your Joy Wallet. When you’re ready, just go to the Track tab to transfer them to your bank account or debit card. Transfers usually take about three to five working days. There’s a flat $1.70 fee per transfer, which goes to Stripe for the bank transfer—Joy doesn’t take a cut.
For example, if you transfer $500, you’ll get about $498.30 deposited, and $1.70 goes to Stripe. Want to skip all the fees? Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App contributions don’t have any transaction or transfer charges. Find out more about transfer timing.
Connecting Stripe
To get credit card contributions and Cash Equivalent payments, you’ll need to link your Stripe account. Setup is quick—just a few minutes, and you only need to do it once for each event. Once you’re connected, all credit card contributions and cash equivalent purchases will go straight into your Joy Wallet, ready for you to transfer to your bank account. How to set up Stripe.
Requesting Contributions via Messages
Cash funds aren’t limited to just the registry page. You can also request contributions directly from selected guests using Joy Messages. Create a fund, attach it to your message, choose which guests will receive it, and send. Guests will get a secure payment link via email. This is useful for group accommodation, shared travel costs, or any contributions outside the usual registry flow. Learn more about cash funds via messaging.
Cash Registry Etiquette
It’s totally normal to ask for cash, but here are some tips to make it even smoother:
Offer both cash funds and physical gifts. Some guests—especially the older folks—prefer choosing something they can wrap. Giving both options keeps everyone comfortable.
Let guests know exactly what the money’s for. Something like “Honeymoon Cooking Class in Florence” feels much more personal than just “Cash Please”. When guests can imagine what they’re helping with, they tend to be more generous.
Don’t include cash fund details on your invitation. Just add your wedding website URL to your save-the-dates and invitations, and let guests find the registry themselves. Directing people straight to a cash fund can feel a bit transactional.
Send thank-you notes that mention the fund. Saying something like, “Thank you for contributing to our Amalfi Coast trip” is warmer than a generic thank you. It reminds your guest that their gift went towards something meaningful.
