Joy Proposal Story: Lunden & Daniel

by Cali Pitchel

Lunden and Daniel met in Maryland (Lunden’s home state) in 2014. Daniel is originally from Georgia, but shortly after joining the U.S. Navy, he was stationed in Washington D.C. The two met at a bar near base and immediately hit it off.

While they were both single, he had orders to be stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and didn’t want to start anything “serious” before leaving (or so he thought…). The two spent the rest of their time together in D.C. as friends—until the night before he left when he asked her to come with him!

They both agreed they had something real, that neither of them wanted to lose, regardless of the circumstances. They maintained a long distance relationship for close to a year. During that time, Lunden took a total of 12 flights back and forth to the island. After an amazing Valentine’s Day visit to Hawaii, she officially decided it was time.

We have to prioritize each other, our happiness, and future goals as a couple. We have to remember not to get lost in wedding planning details, without planning for our marriage, first!

Little did she know, a job opening at her company opened up in Hawaii that same week and the Hawaii office was not even five miles from where Daniel was living! She interviewed, got the job in March, sold her belongings, shipped her car, and moved the first weekend in April. The rest is history!

Give us the details! Who? What? When? Where?

It was two days before Daniel was scheduled to leave for a deployment, and the two did their usual Friday date-night routine at their favorite restaurant. After dinner and drinks (and not to mention, during sunset in Hawaii), they walked along the beach. He got on one knee and asked if she was ready for their next adventure in life, which was being his wife!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

We love how close we’ve gotten to each other, and each other’s families! Planning a wedding on the other side of the world isn’t the easiest task, but it’s been great having the support of our loved ones back home! Military lifestyle can be a chaotic, crazy, spur-of-the-moment, and exciting lifestyle, and the support of our family and friends has made this process so much more enjoyable!

How do you stay sane during wedding planning?

Gathering as much help from family & friends as possible! Also, to not get overly absorbed with planning our big day, we vowed to only discuss wedding related things on certain days of the week! The rest of the time is for us, loving each other, and planning our lives together!
