Joy Proposal Story: Christina & Orry

by Cali Pitchel

How did the two of you meet?

We met while we were students at a pulp mill. I was taking chemical technology and he was taking power engineering. We knew of each other for a few years before ever hanging out, though.
After all, experiences and memories are what make life so grand.

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Last September, we had the chance to go up on a hot air ballon in Sussex, NB. We had to wait all morning and afternoon and we didn’t know if we would even get to go on a balloon because there were so many people at the balloon fiesta we were at! They finally called our names and after waiting for the wind to die down, we hopped in the basket with the pilot and two ladies who were celebrating an 80th birthday. Little did I know, Orry was hiding the ring in his pocket the entire day. He kept his cool for hours, even when it looked uncertain we would get to go. Once we were in the air, we were in awe of the view and the feeling of floating in the air. (For anyone who has yet to visit the east coast in Canada, you need to experience the beauty for yourself.) I had my camera and was taking as many pictures as I could.

Orry then tapped on my shoulder and simply asked me to marry him! I was in such shock, I thought he was somehow making this into a joke since I made a jab at him earlier in the day saying this would be a prime opportunity for someone to propose. But no, he was serious! I remember buzzing with excitement and feeling the happiest I’ve ever felt. Even though we were shoulder to shoulder with the others, the pilot and two ladies didn’t even know this all happened because of the loud noise from the flame. To top it all off, we ended up landing in a field where there was a wedding reception happening. They had a giant wedding cake on the field made from hay bales….so we naturally got our photo taken on top of the giant cake! Best. Day. Ever.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Definitely not doing our own invitations, some things are better left to someone who knows what they are doing! We have been enjoying making our own decorations for our rustic-romantic wedding. I made a wooden welcome sign that took forever to do but I’m quite happy with how it turned out! It’ll sit on an easel and welcome everyone to the beautiful Ticklebelly Hill barn in Oak Bay, New Brunswick.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

We try to cross off a few things on our to-do list every week. This way, by the time the wedding week rolls around we should be done with everything and we can just enjoy it. I’m the worst procrastinator but we are a good team and we’ve been doing a good job at getting things done!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

It looks super professional and I love how we can pack so much information into one website for our guests. I also love how it’s free and we don’t have to worry about timeframes or the website coming down!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

It means a lot to be able to have a way for us and our guests to have a spot to share all the memories from the big day. After all, experiences and memories are what make life so grand.
