Vendor Spotlight: Katelyn Barthlome Photography

by Cali Pitchel

We had the chance to interview Katelyn (of Katelyn Barthlome Photography), and chat wedding photography, what her wedding would look like if she was planning it today, and what’d she be doing if she wasn’t behind the lens. This interview is extra special for Joy because Katelyn lends her talents to us—not only her skills as a photographer, but also her wonderful ability to help our couples through any issues they might have setting up their wedding websites. We’re thankful to have her on our Customer Success team, and loved the opportunity to learn more about her passion as a wedding photographer.

Describe your style in one sentence.

Emotion filled moments laden with natural light.

Do you have a favorite, must-capture moment for every wedding?

My favorite moment to capture for every wedding would have to be that first quiet moment that the couple has together, without anyone else around.

What piece of advice would you give to wedding guests who want to take better pictures at weddings they attend?

In the wedding photography industry there are people we like to refer to as “Uncle Bobs”. These are generally a guest of family member who has a camera and is running around trying to capture every shot. Honestly, just put your phone or IPad or point-and-shoot camera down, and just enjoy the wedding!

The couple hired me to capture their moments, and sometime you think you might be getting a really great shot on your phone, but you’re actually blocking the grooms face so I can’t capture his expression when he first see’s his bride. Don’t be an “Uncle Bob” who makes my job harder, just be a guest and enjoy yourself! And leave the photographing to me!

Honestly, just put your phone or IPad or point-and-shoot camera down, and just enjoy the wedding!

If you could plan your wedding all over again, what would you do differently?

Honestly, if I had to do it again I would book a great photographer and go elope somewhere with epic scenery and grand views. Somewhere most people won’t adventure to.

If you weren’t a wedding photographer, what would you be doing?

When I first started college, I was going for my BS in Biology with an emphasis in Zoology, I wanted to be a Grizzly bear biologist! I totally think that if I wasn’t doing photography I would have pursued that dream and would be living up in Alaska studying Grizzlies!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy should last forever. What does that mean to you?

To me, joy is that twinkle you get in your eye when you catch your love looking at you. Joy is that little line you get around your mouth when you’re laughing so hard that you cry. Joy is the calm that your heart feels when you’re in the arms of your love. No matter the struggles or celebrations you might have together, joy will always be there in these little moments and details.
