Joy Proposal Story: Becki & Sean

by Cali Pitchel

How did the two of you meet?

When Becki was 15 and Sean had just turned 19 at Hola! Mexican Restaurant.
We actively choose to be joyful people and to spread joy wherever we can. Life can be so tough, but joy is a form of magic and the natural expression of love.

How long have you been together?

Seven and a half years! We had our initial teenage romance for 6 months in 2008 when we met, remained really close friends, and got back together in 2010. We were meant to be from the beginning!

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

January 19th, 2016- Sean took me to a restaurant called Mick’s Kitchen which was running out of the place that once was Hola! Mexican Restaurant where we’d met. We wined and dined then strolled along Orewa Beach and ended up by the playground where we’d hung out during our first date. We were looking out at the ocean when Sean started talking romantically then dropped to one knee and popped the question! He had a photographer hiding so we have that magical moment captured forever which is a real bonus!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Imagining how incredible it will be to have all of the people who mean the most to us, there with us celebrating life’s greatest gift- love. We are so excited for everyone to bask in all that love!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

We’re a tight-knit team and share the load. We’ve also watched 5 older siblings (between us) plan their weddings, and having seen some of the difficulties that arise, right from the beginning we made decisions to minimize the stressfulness of the process. For example, we both have massive families and want everyone to be there, so we decided on a food truck DIY wedding which meant we could include everyone rather than having to limit the number of guests for a sit-down meal at an established venue. So, my advice would be to figure out your top priorities early and remember them when the pressure waves hit!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

The designs are awesome and we love that it’s so mobile friendly.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

We’ve only just begun our journey with Joy, but I’d say make the most of having a place where people can read about you as people and what makes you tick as a couple! It’s special to have a little insight into your unique connection. This is probably the only time of your life when everyone wants to hear these details!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

This is so true! We actively choose to be joyful people and to spread joy wherever we can. Life can be so tough, but joy is a form of magic and the natural expression of love.
