How did the two of you meet?
It was my first week living in Darwin and I met a new friend when I moved into my on-campus accommodation. She wanted to catch up with a guy she had worked with previously and he happened to be living with Paul at the time. We were at a bar, well into our tequila’s. When Paul walked in, I only had eyes for him. He was handsome for sure, but it was his sweet nature and easy conversation that drew me to him. We both found common ground with him being an engineer and I was just about to begin my studies in architecture. We started dating and that was that! The strange thing is, about five years beforehand, his Mum and younger sister were temporarily living in my small hometown of Pine Creek, NT, for nursing at the local clinic. His sister and I were great friends for the short time they were there, but we lost contact until Paul and I started dating. It was a surprise to find out I was dating her brother! She and I have since become great friends again. She will even be my Matron of Honor!
Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?
Paul wanted to take me out to dinner for a date night. He had been asking me for some time because we hadn’t been out on our own for a while. It was ‘dry’ season in Darwin (NT Australia) at the time, which is very busy for social occasions because of the great weather! Not knowing what he was planning, I kept saying “no” because we had so many events to go to. Eventually, he pushed until we finally found some time for ourselves. He wanted to surprise me so he didn’t tell me where we were going, he even chose my outfit for me! We were running early (which is odd for us) so he teased me on the way and kept driving down the wrong roads while I tried to guess where we were going. We went down almost every street in Darwin City. Finally, we made our destination at Char Restaurant where he had taken me for our second date. We arrived, and when the waiter took us to our table there was a bouquet of red roses and a bottle of Veuve. I was so happy and so surprised! It was when we sat down and I realized there was a photographer taking photos of us, that I started to catch on. He got straight to the point. He got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! It was very simple, incredibly “us” and incredibly romantic! I shed plenty of happy tears and I’m so glad he organized a photographer to capture the memories for us to keep forever!
What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?
I’m loving the whole process so far! We moved to Brisbane (QLD Australia) after our engagement so we’ve had the opportunity to enjoy exploring wedding options in a new city. We spent a lot of time looking for the perfect venue and going for drives through the countryside. We are now one year out and starting to make design decisions. I can’t pick one favorite experience, the whole planning experience is new and exciting!
How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?
We started planning in advance. Starting with a simple vision- outdoor wedding, rainforest or garden setting, romantic and elegant. We chose our date for the good weather and venue availability and then we went from there. Everything else has just flowed together easily after locking in our venue! I think the best thing we did when choosing a venue was not get hung up on a particular date, but just a general time of year for our wedding. We have all of our main vendors booked. All we have to do over the next year is find bridesmaid and groomsmen clothing and decorations. Plus, all the little details and loose ends. We feel very relaxed so far!
