Joy Proposal Story: Ly & Brian

by Allie Grampa

Ly and Brian met online, as per the normal these days! With a little help from a talented artist and his friends, Brian planned the perfect proposal—it was truly a work of art. (Get it?) Ly gives us the details, tells us how she stays sane during wedding planning, and gives us the secret to the kind of love and happiness that is unconditional and timeless.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Brian planned an outing with a group of friends, starting with a bistro brunch, followed by a paint and sip. In the middle of learning how to paint an image of a couple (who happened to look suspiciously like Ly and Brian) gazing at the Eiffel tower, the group took a break to check out the instructor’s artwork … including one with the words “Will you marry me?” painted across the top.

On seeing the painting, Brian got down on one knee and professed his love. Ly of course said yes, everyone cheered, and the group celebrated the night away with bocce and dancing. Bonus points: the whole day was captured by a hidden photographer! Double bonus points: Brian gave another epic speech during a traditional Vietnamese engagement ceremony a month later!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Visiting wedding venues for the first time. The reality that we were getting married set in that day. More importantly, the experience affirmed that we were a team making decisions together and sharing the same vision — not only for our wedding, but also for our life together.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

By reminding one another that the most memorable part of a wedding is the people who will be there. A bottle of wine also helps.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy should last forever. What does that mean to you?

A wedding is a fun celebration, but real joy comes from sharing everyday moments with one another. When chowing down on pizza off paper plates is as delicious as eating filet mignon on fine china, when watching Netflix on the couch is as fun as dancing under a ballroom chandelier, and when holding hands through a loss is as meaningful as holding hands while reciting wedding vows … that’s when you know happiness and love is unconditional and timeless.
