Joy Proposal Story: Adam & Colleen

Joy Proposal Story: Adam & Colleen

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

We were planning to watch the fireworks at 6pm, then go to a nice dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, and then watch the final fireworks in Calgary at midnight. The Airdrie fireworks were held in a football field overlooking a small man-made pond, the fireworks were set off on the opposite side of the pond. Most spectators were sitting on the bleachers or in the area where the snow had been stampeded down. Keep in mind, we live in Canada and on December 31st, we had snow that was knee deep! Adam and I opted to trudge through the deep snow so we could lean up against the chainlink fence and have front row seats to the fireworks without anyone in our way. Due to this, it felt like it was our own private show since there was no one around us. As we cuddled against the fence, watching the fireworks, Colleen started going on about how much she appreciated the relationship they had with one another, and how special it was. At this point, Adam (who was planning to propose that evening unbeknownst to Colleen) realized that she was setting him up perfectly, so he got down on one knee in the deep snow and proposed as a large beautiful firework was going off. It was the perfect proposal for us!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Realizing that we have the opportunity to plan a party, just for us two. We can customize everything to fit in with our personalities and interests.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Take a lot of time to plan. We got engaged at the end of 2015 and we are getting married near the end of 2018. We have left ourselves a lot of time for planning! We only have to do a little bit at a time and we have a lot of time to properly research vendors. Also, working together has been huge. Adam takes on the responsibility of certain parts of planning while Colleen takes on the responsibility of other parts of planning.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

I don’t have to learn how to program a website or code a website! Yay!

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Take a look at everything Joy has to offer and use anything you need. For us personally, we are putting very few details on the physical invitation, and instead, asking guests to refer to the website.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

Weddings are an exciting and joyous time, however, they are also a time of stress and arguments. You make a choice every day to be happy, make the choice to be happy and joyful on your special day. Also, realize that as in the Pixar movie Inside Out, although Joy is important, recognizing and appreciating other emotions such as sadness, anger, etc. is also important.
