Joy Proposal Story: Alex & Adam

Joy Proposal Story: Alex & Adam

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Adam was on an internship in parliament hill in Ottawa, Canada. Alex would visit from Montreal on weekends, which is where she was working. They spent the day exploring the city, reading in the park, and preparing dinner with friends they made in Ottawa. After a lovely candlelit dinner, Adam suggested he and Alex take a midnight stroll on the Rideau Canal where they had shared many walks that same summer. After grabbing some gelato at their favorite spot, they headed down to the canal. He popped the question just under the first bridge on their usual route. She, of course, said, “Yes!”

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Creating something together as a team that really reflects both of our tastes and personalities. We loved going through the process of bringing both of our visions together. When we decided to look into destination weddings it was an absolute dream to bring the idea of Scotland to life. It is a place that holds a great deal of sentimental value to both of us. The bride is a Highland dancer and her father is from Scotland, and the groom is in a Highland regiment having always loved Scottish culture. We are looking forward to unplugging from our fast-paced lives and sharing this trip with our friends and family.

“…our case, there really is no mountain too high or valley too low for us to bring each other joy!”

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

We made sure to take our time and not rush into setting the date or choosing a venue. We ended up finding our dream venue and destination in Scotland. It’s a beautiful estate house on a golf course!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

Making the tidbits section was awesome. We loved deciding what our favorite moments were and getting to share those with our friends. We also loved going through our old photos and having the ability to highlight our favorite ones on the site.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Start your website before you send your save the dates so that you can use a consistent theme. Certain themes are available in all of the stationary you could ever need for the wedding, and will save you a lot of stress!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

We recently celebrated nine years as a couple, spending half of that time long-distance. The key to a happy relationship is communication, but this can be difficult when your partner is in a different time zone. Providing continual love and support from a distance requires a great deal of commitment but we make sure to make time for our relationship. Our wedding is going to be an amazing opportunity to celebrate the end to many years apart and will allow us to begin our next chapter with a bang! We also see it as an opportunity to thank our family and friends for their amazing support over the years. Our commitment through this time and across vast distances (five cities) means that in our case, there really is no mountain too high or valley too low for us to bring each other joy!
