Joy Proposal Story: Alissa & Maria

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Maria owns a business doing event lighting. So, it’s common to go with her to events to take measurements, set up, etc. She took me to what I thought was a private wedding ceremony to set up intimate lights at sunset. Afterward, we were going on a date behind a restaurant that had a beautiful water feature and wishing well in a large park. The area was closed off to the public for a “special event”. (Which I thought was a wedding!)

We arrived and were greeted by a videographer, who was also waiting for the people to arrive. Maria set up her gobo earlier, pointing it on the back wall, across a water feature. We were just waiting for sunset to make sure the light was in focus, and we would then be on our way. The videographer asked me to stand in front of the wishing well just to adjust her camera, which I thought nothing of. As the sun set, and it became time to flip the switch, Maria got down on a knee (which is also normal for plugging in the cord for the light fixture). As she plugged the light in, I naturally looked over to inspect the image which read, “Alissa will you marry me?”

The event was not a wedding, but a proposal… my proposal! The videographer was there to catch the proposal…my proposal! We walked around the park and came back to a new table set up, again in an area of the restaurant that was closed off just for us. We had a candlelit dinner with a classical guitarist to serenade us. We toasted with champagne and enjoyed the romance of the evening!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

My favorite part of wedding planning has actually been all the little things – introducing people to my fiance, trying on dresses with my friends, and just enjoying being engaged.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

As much as the little things have brought joy to wedding planning, the same things have definitely generated stress and pressure. Refocusing with Maria on how special our day will be, reminding ourselves to be present even when planning the details, and knowing we are in this together, has helped me stay sane.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

Joy has been very user friendly. I have tried out other sites and found myself easily overwhelmed by it all!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

The wedding itself may only be a few consecutive hours shared with friends and family, but those moments and memories will stay with us forever.
