Joy Proposal Story: Derrick & Jordan

Joy Proposal Story: Derrick & Jordan

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

I had already picked out a ring long before knowing exactly how or when I would propose. We’d been having frequent discussions for over a year about planning a trip to the Grand Canyon someday. So, when we finally booked the trip for June of last year, I knew that would be the perfect place! I informed Jordan just prior to entering the park that I had secretly made reservations for us to have dinner at the historic El Tovar Hotel located on the Canyon’s rim. Before dinner, we spent the last bit of daylight taking in the sights of the Canyon, as neither of us had been there before. We arrived for our dinner reservation just as the sun was setting. After thoroughly enjoying a delicious meal, I popped the question right there at our table. I was convinced that she had already figured out beforehand what my plan was, but Jordan swears that she was completely surprised. Our waiter seemed unimpressed, but personally, I was extremely thrilled that she said yes!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

I think getting our engagement photos taken and getting the website up and running have been the most enjoyable parts. The website is great because we are able to put all the pertinent information in one place. And since we wanted it to be fully completed before sharing it with family and friends, it helped us to get 95% of the details figured out far in advance of the wedding. Seeing the positive response of family and friends to the website, as well as the Save the Date cards we mailed out, has been really satisfying!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

We have just tried to keep things very simple. We have chosen to exclude some of the trappings of modern weddings which aren’t that appealing or important to us. Honestly, our budget also demands it. But ultimately we would rather that the planning be less stressful than our wedding be full of unnecessary details. Also, we have tried to pace ourselves by starting early and breaking our tasks and planning sessions into steady, manageable chunks. So far so good, but there’s still a lot left to do!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

From the standpoint of editing and customizing our content, the dashboard is very elegant and easy to navigate, which is very helpful. We are excited that our guests will be able to easily interact with us and with each other through the Joy app!

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

The website is so easy to edit and navigate, which really frees up more time for you to personalize your content. Use that extra time to brainstorm interesting customizable content for your website so that it uniquely reflects who you both are as a couple. Your guests will really appreciate being able to engage with you in a personal way through the website.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

All of the planning that goes into a wedding can seem like a very big deal as it’s happening, but a wedding ceremony is just a very, very, small part of a marriage. We’re both very excited to share our wedding day with our family and friends. We have a deep appreciation for the symbolism of our commitment to each other that the ceremony represents! But whereas the wedding celebrates our love and commitment to each other, ultimately living and cultivating that love and commitment every day will be more exciting and fulfilling as we endeavor in our life together.
