Joy Proposal Story: Emily & Bryan

by Cali Pitchel

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Bryan had planned to propose our trip to Iceland. A few days into the trip, we were visiting a waterfall. I was feeling ill, but I hadn’t told him. He got down on one knee and pulled out the box, and I waved him off. He looked so confused! (And so did the onlookers.) I told him I didn’t feel well, and he laughed. I was worried he would wait a while after that, so the rest of the trip I kept telling him how well I was feeling!

Joy is a heart bursting at the seams and is something we hope for in our future marriage.

A few days later, we walking around Reykjavik before getting dinner. It’s a pretty city, and the streets were already lit up for Christmas. We stumbled upon a big lake in the middle of the city and a few swans swam up to us. Bryan got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

A lot of friends and family have offered to contribute different things because they’re so excited for us and want to be involved. One friend is making our cake, two others will play live music during the ceremony, and Bryan’s mom is knitting ties for all the groomsmen. Everyone’s generosity is really touching.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Working out is a great way to relieve stress, but we also try to keep our wedding in perspective; we’re really excited to begin our lives together as a married couple! We try to focus on that rather than get bogged down trying to get every detail perfect.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

It’s really user-friendly.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Look through all the different sections with their examples even if you’re not sure that they relate to your wedding. We’ve included more things on our site than we thought we would, but our guests have already told us how helpful it has been to them.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

The wedding should definitely be a happy day, but the marriage is what you ultimately walk away with. Joy is a step beyond happiness; joy is a heart bursting at the seams and is something we hope for in our future marriage.
