Joy Proposal Story: Kevin & Catherine

by Cali Pitchel

How did the two of you meet?

I first saw Cat from a photo booth strip of pictures with a mutual friend in the 7th grade (it was on our friend’s school binder) and knew there was something about her. But we didn’t actually meet until we had an English class together our freshman year of high school. I asked to borrow a pencil…

How long have you been together?

We first started dating in December of our sophomore year of high school, took a little break, and have been together ever since January 3rd of our junior year of high school (2012). We did long distance all through college—Kevin at the United States Naval Academy in Maryland and Cat attending college and playing soccer in Dallas, Texas at Dallas Baptist University. It was tough but obviously worth it!

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Welp, long story short, on December 23rd I tricked her into thinking we had dinner reservations at the Pearl in San Antonio. I took her up to the top floor of a building to see the sunset on our way there, then went and ‘found’ a ‘maintenance only’ ladder, climbed up top, and somehow got her to come with me (after being called crazy a few times).

At the end of the day, marriage is about far more than just the wedding.

She then saw a scene with some white carpet, rose pedals, two wood stools, a cross I made her back in high school, and the journal we’ve shared back and forth since coming to the Naval Academy. I wrote a letter to her in there telling her how I felt, then got down on one knee after she finished reading and asked… something. Can’t remember exactly! But she said yes. I do remember that.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

We are getting married at a brand new venue in Gruene, TX and it was really cool to go check it out together while it was still being built and realize that is where we will become husband and wife!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Take things one decision at a time and remember that at the end of the day, marriage is about far more than just the wedding! Also, we are extremely grateful for our loved ones who have been so helpful through this process. We have the best, most encouraging team of family and friends surrounding us.

How did you hear about Joy?

I (Catherine) found Joy while searching the web for the best wedding websites. I read about it on a blog and was immediately drawn to it because of the name.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

I love the simplicity of Joy and how personal we are able to get with it! And the countdown to the wedding, of course.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

If you know what questions your guests may have, create your own RSVP questions for them. We found this to be super helpful!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

To us, this means that we have an ever increasing joy found in Christ. While a wedding only lasts one day, we get to move forward TOGETHER into deeper, eternal joy. How cool is that?!
