Joy Proposal Story: Lindsay & Darrick

by Allie Grampa

Lindsay and Darrick met in 2008 when Darrick had just moved to Los Angeles for an internship interview at a music company. Low and behold, Lindsay was the one conducting the interview. At the time, Lindsay was transitioning out of her position overseeing the internship program, so she didn’t work much with Darrick over the next two years. All Lindsay ever heard were glowing reviews and high praise about Darrick’s work ethic and character. It must have rubbed off, because now Lindsay and Darrick are planning their wedding!

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Darrick asked Lindsay to be his girlfriend on her birthday, February 24, 2012. Four years later on February 24, 2016, Darrick got down on one knee at Record Surplus in Santa Monica. We met working at a music company, so it only made sense that music would be a part of our proposal.

We were at the record store, like any other normal day. Darrick wanted to stop there after we had gotten lunch for Lindsay’s birthday. Stevie Wonder was playing—Darrick’s all-time favorite artist—Lindsay didn’t think much of it. As soon as Stevie Wonder’s “Knock Me Off My Feet” came on, Lindsay knew that something was different.

She walked over to Darrick and already had tears in her eyes. Darrick told Lindsay later that he was supposed to walk over to her! Just as Darrick was about to ask Lindsay to marry him, Lindsay saw one of Darrick’s friends behind the shelves taking photos, so she knew this was really happening. It all happened so fast, but she can still remember the butterflies as if it were yesterday.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

It has been fun getting excited about ideas together, really wanting to make the ideas our own. Our proposal will be just over a year once we get married. We have done a good job doing a little at a time so we aren’t feeling too rushed to get things done.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Reminding ourselves that the most important thing is us–if anything goes wrong on the day of the event, it won’t matter.
