Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?
We went on a trip to the Maldives as a Christmas gift and a few days after we got there Julian had organised a picnic for us on a private island. We got there by boat, the weather was amazing, and the hotel staff had set up a really romantic spot for us. Suddenly the weather turned and we were stuck in a tropical rain storm. Everything got soaked and we were just there holding onto the umbrellas waiting for it to stop…but it didn’t.
I think marriage means being prepared for the fact that there won’t only be joy in store for you as a couple, but that you are committed to sticking out the rough times together too, which is part of what makes it such a romantic and beautiful thing.
After about two hours of the downpour, Julian discovered that the ocean was warmer than the air and convinced me to go swimming with him in the rain. He suddenly dove under as if he had spotted something on the ocean floor and came back up holding the ring! I said yes and an hour later the sky cleared and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset. When we got back to our hotel room there was a surprise dinner for two set up on the beach. Most romantic day of my life!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?
All of the love, happiness and excitement for us from our friends and family around us has really been one of the best things about deciding to get married! Everyone has really been overwhelmingly positive!
How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?
I feel sane most of the time with occasional break-downs haha. I think it’s important to remember to ask people for help and distribute tasks. I’m also using an online project management tool to keep track of to-dos, don’t know if that qualifies as “sane.”
How did you hear about Joy?
It was recommended to us by friends who got married last year when it wasn’t available yet in Europe (or so they thought at least?) and we were happy to discover that it is now!
What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?
That app really helps connect us to the guests more than just a website would in the run-up to the event and I think it just heightens the happy anticipation!
What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?
I think it’s so straightforward! There’s no way you couldn’t use its full potential.
At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?
I hope the memories of the joy on that day will last forever in our minds and also in digital / visual form. However I think they don’t say “for better or for worse” for no reason – I think marriage means being prepared for the fact that there won’t only be joy in store for you as a couple, but that you are committed to sticking out the rough times together too, which is part of what makes it such a romantic and beautiful thing….
