Joy Proposal Story: Lucy & Marvin

by Kelsey Vickers

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Minnesota Monthly’s GrillFest is an annual event that Marvin and Lucy have been attending together for four years now. Lucy first discovered the event on Groupon (she loves a good deal!) and took Marvin there as a surprise for his birthday. He groaned the whole way there, he hates surprises.  They spent the afternoon wading through different food and beverage booths, taste testing all of them. They had such a great time, they’ve  gone every year since! In May of 2016, Lucy received an email from the event coordinator of GrillFest. Since they had been such loyal customers in the past, she won a free VIP early entry package. This included a tour of CHS field, a free t-shirt and a chance for photo opportunities to be used for promotions.

“She quickly turned around to find Marvin on both knees (he wanted to be original!) He had a beautiful ring in his hand. “

Well, of course, Lucy took the bait and called all of her family and friends to come with! They arrived early to CHS field and met up with Andy. He took them around and then lead them down to the field. They posed for photos and then Andy handed Lucy a bag that had “the t-shirt” in it. She was caught in the limelight in front of the camera and held the t-shirt up without even reading it. Then, her family went nuts. She turned the shirt around and read, “SHE SAID YES” while Ben King’s “Stand by Me” was echoing through the stadium. She turned to look at the Jumbotron and was completely surprised to see a photo of her and Marvin with the words “Lucy, Will you marry me?”. She quickly turned around to find Marvin on both knees (he wanted to be original!). He had a beautiful ring in his hand. She said, “Of course!” The rest of the day was filled with family, friends, laughter, sunshine, great food, and drinks. Marvin fooled everyone, including his mom and her mum. Lucy is still the most gullible person ever!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Taste testing the food! We will be having BBQ. It seems fitting as Marvin proposed at GrillFest!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

One of the perks of having a long engagement is that you can take breaks from wedding planning. It allows you to take a step back and forget about trying to plan the perfect day. It reminds us to spend quality time together, remembering why we are getting married in the first place!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

We like being a little different. Joy, unlike other available websites, offers everything and more than we wanted. It’s a digital age and we wanted to do all of our save the dates and invitations online. It’s economical, convenient, and allows us to keep in touch with our guests throughout the wedding planning process. We love the layout and that it displays our awesome engagement photos. The ability to have an abundance of information for our guests with the ease and organization of invitations and the RSVP process has been great, especially when allotting plus ones. It is extremely user-friendly! Even my 85-year-old grandma RSVP’d on her own from London.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Take advantage of every feature! You won’t be disappointed.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

The most important thing is that we are surrounded by the friends and family that have supported us over the last eight years and who will continue to support us in the future. In their presence, we will exchange our vows and our commitment to one another. It is the love for each other and the love provided to us by our family and friends that will extend our joy far beyond the wedding day!
