Joy Proposal Story: Maggie & Varin

by Allie Grampa

Maggie and Varin met on the first day of school at the Tuck School of Business. They were assigned to the same 6-person study group—and apparently they had ‘complimentary skill sets!’

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Varin started planning with Maggie’s sister months before the actual proposal to have the perfect ring made. He asked for her input, but ultimately had to decide on his own (Maggie hadn’t given any clues). Varin sneakily told Maggie he was heading off for a golf trip, and flew down to LA to have the ring custom made – even picking out the stone himself! After receiving the ring, he waited almost 8 weeks before he actually proposed!

Since we live together, Varin was worried Maggie might accidentally find it in a hiding spot. However, he managed to keep it hidden until we took a trip to Big Sur. Varin did some research, and found a good hike for us to do in Limekiln State Park. At one point, during the hike, we stopped along a creek in a beautiful clearing, with the sun filtering in through some redwoods, Varin got on one knee, and proposed to Maggie, who responded with “Of course!”

In hindsight, one of the things that was really special is that we didn’t have cell phone service, the moment was really private for the two of us – and we got to enjoy it (while taking a few selfies of course!) before we started to tell our closest family and friends. We can’t wait to go back to that spot!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Finding the perfect venue that shows off the natural beauty of Northern California! We have so many family and friends coming from out of town, and we are trying to make sure that all aspects are representative of the things we love about living in San Francisco!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Maggie stays sane by running and Varin stays sane by reading and helping calm Maggie down when she’s being less than sane.

What was your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

The interface for setting up the website is great! It’s really optimized for telling our story as a couple. And it also helps us create the feel of a fun-filled weekend around our wedding.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Think about the story you want to tell about yourselves and your relationship together – and set up the website so that it reflects the two of you.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy should last forever. What does that mean to you?

Maggie: Being happy & healthy and surrounded by those who love me – and that starts with finding my partner in life.

Varin: Being able to spend the rest of my life and experience new adventures with my best friend.
