Joy Proposal Story: Marissa & Gene

Joy Proposal Story: Marissa & Gene

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

For the story to really make sense you have to go back to high school. Gene asked me out my senior year by hiding a note in a Snickers bar and giving it to me on Valentines Day. Cute, right? Well, I lost the Snickers bar and never got to read the note. After a little confusion, we worked it out and have been great since. Fast forward almost seven years to Christmas 2018 at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. (We are both huge Disney fans, it’s definitely one of our favorite places!) The fireworks were about to start and he handed me a Snickers bar seemingly out of thin air and told me to open it. So with tears already in my eyes, I opened it and there was a note rolled up with the ring around it. Gene took the ring, proposed, and I obviously said, “Yes!”. I sobbed the entire time. I know it’s cheesy, but I love cheesy, so it was perfect!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

I really liked finding a photographer. It was really difficult but I finally just found one I like and it was all super easy after that! Plus, photos are the one true thing you have to keep that can remind you of your wedding, so finding a good photographer was super important.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

I think I just get to a point where I stop and curl up into a little ball and then I feel better. Plus, alcohol.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

It’s been super easy to use Joy for our wedding, and I love how it looks! I’m a graphic designer so websites and design are definitely a big one for me.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Know the details of your wedding and maybe have hotel arrangements already figured out! It’s a great feature but since I don’t know any of that yet, I haven’t been able to use it!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

Throughout this whole process, a lot of people have emphasized how much money you spend on a wedding when you could just go elope and save that money for something else. They are completely right, but you know what? I wanted a wedding. I want the memory of my dad walking me down the aisle wearing a beautiful dress. I want the memory of seeing the one person who means the world to me and more, waiting for me at the end of that aisle. I want the memory of seeing all the people I love in one place, dancing and laughing. The memories, love, and joy you feel on your wedding day, no matter what else happens in life, last a lifetime.
