Joy Proposal Story: Meagan & Jim

by Cali Pitchel

Meagan and Jim met the night Meagan moved to Washington. She didn’t know anyone, and she was staying on the couch of an old high school friend I hadn’t seen in years and three other people she’d never met. Coincidentally, her old friend had followed Jim to Washington state a few years prior. Jim stopped by the house on his way back from work, celebratory drinks to the new arrival were had by all, and Meagan, physically and emotionally exhausted, fell asleep on Jim’s shoulder while everyone sat down to watch a movie. The rest, as they say, is history.

Who made the first move?

Jim did. He went on a hiking excursion to climb Mt. Si one weekend and the accomplishment gave him a big surge of courage. He dropped by where I was staying and asked if I wanted to go out to dinner together – just the two of us. Now, seven years later, we will be getting married at the foot of Mt. Si!

Give us the proposal details!

It was a pretty low-key affair, actually! We were at home cuddled up on the couch watching some TV show or another. I was feeling poorly that day, so we were wrapped up in a giant blanket. During a commercial, Jim asked if he could have a kiss, so I leaned over and gave him a kiss. A few seconds later, he asked if he could have another one, so I leaned over and gave him another one. Then he asked if he could have “a whole lot of kisses, for the rest of our lives.” I said, “Sure,” and he had to kind of nod his head over to where he had pulled out a ring! According to Jim, I never technically said “yes,” just nodded emphatically and cried and held him.

Joy can be found through each other every day – whether it’s spending time together, watching your spouse’s face light up when they laugh, or reliving memories of awesome times past. We want to keep the joy alive in our relationship every day for years to come!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Our engagement session with Jenny Jimenez was definitely a highlight! I am really photo-shy but she made everything so comfortable and just encouraged us to be ourselves and have fun.

The other thing that I am having a lot of fun with is coming up with fun activities and touches for people to enjoy at the wedding. Both of our families are out of state and will be meeting for the first time, so we really want to express who we are as a couple – laid back, with great games and good music, beautiful nature around us, and a lot of humor!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Get back to me on that one? Haha. I think sitting down when we first were engaged and deciding what we wanted the heart of the wedding to be and what experience we wanted to share has really helped, because then each decision can support that vision. We have been really communicative with each other throughout and given ourselves permission to go with our gut. I also have a friend getting married this year and we are serving as bridesmaids for each other, so sometimes it’s nice to get together and have a stress-venting lunch!

We know you have a busy schedule. How do you make time for each other, especially while planning the wedding?

It helps that we are planning the wedding together – we have a “planning meeting” every week to go over where things are at. That way, wedding planning doesn’t dominate every conversation, and we can still spend quality time together every day. We’ve also had a long engagement (18 months), so there was never a rush to have everything done immediately.

How did you hear about Joy?

I knew I was going to need a website since so many guests are from out-of-state and it’s the easiest way to have kind of a central point where you can put all of the information. I did a pretty lengthy search and comparison between a few different free wedding website providers and decided Joy was going to best suit our needs.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

I like how interactive it is for the guests! They can ask questions that the FAQ might not answer, share their own photos and moments, and get an idea of who else is coming from the guest list.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Make sure to add additional pages as needed, and have fun writing out your information and answers!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

A wedding is an awesome celebration of love that you can share with your family and friends, but what lasts forever is the relationship between you and your spouse. Joy can be found through each other every day – whether it’s spending time together, watching your spouse’s face light up when they laugh, or reliving memories of awesome times past. We want to keep the joy alive in our relationship every day for years to come!
