Joy Proposal Story: Sarah & Matthew

by Cali Pitchel

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Matt and Sarah met at Trinity School at Greenlawn in South Bend, Indiana. Our mothers, Melinda and Tami, both wanted us to widen our horizons and participate in mock trial. Long meetings, chocolate milk, and many phone calls began the start of our adventure. Our adventure began in high school and continued through college, graduate school, Peace Corps spanning across 10 years and 6 continents…

After many years of dating we are finally in the same country, same state and even the same city where Matt proposed to me on November 4th, 2016 at 12:45 pm.

Joy is a large part of a happy and healthy marriage.

Matt had been in Peace Corps for the past 26.1 months (who was counting?), and he was supposed to serve 27 months arriving home the day before Thanksgiving 2016. He has told me since day one he could not leave the Peace Corps early because he had this in mind the whole time. He told me the week before he proposed he was hiking on an 8 day trek “Huayhuash Circuit” in Peru where he would have no internet, however he would send me automated daily emails. (Unbeknownst to me he was saying goodbye to all of his host family and Peruvian friends 3 weeks early, catching a plane back to the states and going to ask me to marry him.)

On November 4th his last email to me was “See you soon…. ;)”. I was thinking that to mean FaceTime soon… low and behold when I got home and opened the door who was standing there with flowers and an amazing smile, Matt. Matt got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I immediately said yes!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Taking dance lessons together… we are doing a 5 part choreographed dance with “father/daughter”, “mother/son”, “bridal party dance”, “groom party dance” and then ending with our “first dance”… we are having someone else put it together.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Mimosas…lots of them.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

Easy interactive nature of the site. I have had numerous comments from guests who love being able to see all of our engagement pictures.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

I would recommend making sure to do as many questions as possible on the RSVP. I also am planning to use the “silence phone feature” for our wedding ceremony.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

Joy is a large part of a happy and healthy marriage. A wedding is just a day while a marriage is forever, just like joy is forever.
