Joy Proposal Story: Sharita & Tyler

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Sharita grew up in Indonesia for most of her childhood and it was technically where our first date was. We tried to plan a college reunion trip there with a group of friends but one by one, they all dropped out until it was just the two of us! We still ended up going and we fell in love on the trip (or at least Tyler fell in love, Sharita fought it for as long as she could). Our first day in Indonesia back in 2016 we spent the day at the Borobudur temple.

Tyler surprised Sharita with a trip back to Indonesia for Thanksgiving. (She thought we were going to California!) Once they arrived in Indonesia, Tyler took Sharita to the Borobudur temple where both his and her parents surprised her. He popped the question and she said, “Yes!”

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

We are planning a destination wedding.  Getting to see how our friends and family react when we tell them they all have to fly to England from the United States, has been really fun!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

We always try to keep a sense of humor. When Sharita makes Tyler spend 45 minutes picking out envelopes for the wedding invitations, he has to make sure he’s constantly cracking jokes!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

It’s segmented and makes it easier to focus on one task at a time. We have a tendency to jump all over the place and it’s nice to have a guideline of what should be done!

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

We have had a lot of fun working together on each section of the site. For example, we saw the “my story” part and then each set aside a bit of time to write our own version of our story. We are trying to keep it fun and make planning feel like less of a chore.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

A wedding is often one of the happiest times in someone’s life. Joy is realizing that this is more than a party for your friends and family, it’s getting to promise your life to someone in front of all of your loved ones as witnesses. It’s a special step to a lifetime of happiness.
